I'm probably going to piss a few people off with this comment. But I'm gonna make it anyway.
If you're looking to AOS from the VWP or any "other" type visa (student, etc.) then I'd listen to the advice of people who have done just that.
I wouldn't pay much attention to people who came with K-1 or CR-1 when they tell you that you're going to be forcibly thrown out of the country and banned for life because you didn't do things "legally."
Yes, I'm exaggerating. But if you look at the "you better not do it, it's dangerous" posts, they tend to be from people who used K-1 or CR-1.
That's my two cents. We don't know many details about the poster's situation, but I didn't see any reason that he can't file AOS.

I don't trust that website, but in any way, you are misreading that. It says if you use the EAD, you will be violating your previous F-1 status, and that is true. As I said, using it will free you from your F-1 working restrictions. But if you don't want to use it, you don't have to. You don't have to apply for it either. I don't think that avoiding the EAD can somehow let you fall back to F-1 status after an AOS denial, for the reasons listed above.
I am confused why you are expecting multiple RFE's. If you read the forms carefully, and there are also good guides at VJ, you simply supply what is listed. If you miss an item, they will send an RFE. It is true if you fail to respond properly to the RFE, or never send anything back, then you will be denied, but why would you do that? THey tell you what is missing and you send back what they need. It's very simple.
If you have a real relationship, you will not be denied. Plenty of people have done this. You are being educated at University, surely you have the mental capacity to properly fill out some forms?
That website you reference is full of fraud, so I wouldn't let them scare you. I was there for a while when we first applied, and I found the overall level of comprehension to be a lot lower than here. I saw all sort of people with multiple convictions, fake certificates, all kind of junk. VJ has its share of paranoia, but I really think that planning for a failed AOS and making contingencies is not a realistic or fruitful exercise if you have a valid marriage.

It's ok if you entered with the intent to marry. It's not ok if you entered with intent to adjust status after you married.
Hopefully, you have lots of evidence that you intended to return to your home country. Job? Lease? Something?

I had a friend write a letter. She didn't follow any template, she just talked about how she first met me, how I always talked about my Canadian boyfriend, and then about meeting him. She described the way she sees us interact, and how I love him in spite of him being a pain in the #### . It was really sweet and funny and I was happy to hand it over with the rest of our evidence. She signed her name, gave her phone number, and had it notarized.
I don't know how much weight it carried in our interview, but the IO seemed happy to see it and set it aside to read later. (It was kind of long.)
I don't think writing a "I'm so and so, age 35, and I know these people are really married" would mean as much as the letter written by my friend.

There is a whole lot of help out there for low-income people. I help them get it, it's my job. I have a complete understanding of what it's like to not have $5 to spare. And yet, they all get IDs. Every single one of them. You sort of need it for life in general.
A list of SSN's would be awesome, if not for identity theft. I don't really want my SSN in the hands of a poll place worker, do you?

Here I am, a registered democrat and probably someone you'd call a liberal (I like gay people). And I agree with you almost 100%. Businesses can barely function here. Unions are way too powerful and our society is way too litigious. There's other problems, of course, but those are the ones that pop to mind.
