Courthouse weddings with a party afterwards are WAY more fun (I say that because that's what we did, and it was fun!). You can dress as beautifully as you like for the courthouse wedding, bring a couple of witnesses, whatever, and go out to a nice supper afterwards, then plan a big party. Weddings cost so much; people in the US sometimes spend the equivalent of half a house on a wedding which, to me, is a complete crazy waste of money...but it's important to some, so whatever floats your McBoat. 😀

Highly agree.  My wife's and I wedding happened on Halloween, so it was definitely a party afterwards!

So, I’m not sure if I have accurate info regarding this, but I’ve read some info on K1 visas regarding courthouse weddings but the info I found was slightly outdated, so I want to know if anybody has any input on this.

I read online that often times with the K1 visa, couples will wait a year or a good few months to have a big expensive ceremony due to all of the logistics and planning and traveling family members from different countries and finances that go into the visa process which is super unreliable timeframe wise, and have JUST a courthouse wedding instead within the 90 day period.

So my question is... could we do this? Would just a courthouse wedding within the 90 day window suffice for the time being, and then we could do a bigger ceremony once the stress from getting my fiancée into the states is over?

I know they want lots of proof of wedding plans and such, I just wonder if you could explain that you want to do just a courthouse wedding instead for the time being because it’s hard to plan around the K1 process? I mean, they know it’s difficult, right?

    Thanks for your time

That's what my wife and I did for out wedding.  Just to get the legal aspect of marrying withing the 90 days of the K-1 visa, we did a court house marriage, accompanied by some family members.  As you know, if you want a major wedding ceremony, it takes time and energy, so there's absolutely nothing wrong going to a court of marriage.  Once complete, then take the time to plan out the "dream" reception you and your fiance were hoping for.  My wife and I waited 6 months after our marriage to have the reception that we wanted, and it worked out fine.

The only details you will have to provide about the wedding is if the interviewing officer asks for details about the wedding.  Our interviewing officer asked my wife "So tell me about the wedding plans"

Simple and to the point.  Good luck!

Yeah, it says to bring each of our birth certificates but doesn’t specify “original” or not.  We were definitely going to bring the copies, just wasn’t sure if the Original was needed.  I don’t even have my original, had to get a certified copy from the state of Virginia.

Certified copy is just as good for us.  Fo rmy wife's I brought her original and a copy translated in English.  I even brought a copy of our marriage certificate, but when I tried to show it to the Officer, he said it wasnt required since he knows it was in the file already, most likely be the same case with your birth certificates.

  4. I brought a copy of my wife's just in case, along with my step-son's.  I figured if they needed to see it, they Officer wouldn't want to take the time to dig through the application folders.  Just go off the interview notice they will end you in the mail for all the documents required for you and your wife to bring.  Like they always say:  "Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it."

My given name in my old gc was "First Name Middle Initial" even though my given name on my passport was written as "First Name Middle Name". No problem with immigration. It's probably for lack of space that they shortened your step son's middle name.

I even have to shorten his name in airline tickets since his full first name doesn't fot on the forms at all.

That's what I was thinking, since his full legal name is actually 7 names in one, yes 7, so thats why I was thinking that could be a possiblility

  7. Hey everyone.  I know I'm repeating the same problem many people wrote before, and I do appologize in advance...I've read many previous posts before about individuals having mispelled names on their green cards, so I am aware of the I-90 forms to fill out in order to replace, but I did just want to ask questions anyways.

So for my step-son, his middle name is "Yutaka" but it shows as "Yutak" on his GC.  I am due to travel overeas to my next duty station in December, would this possibly be an issue? I am worried about possibly not receiving the corrected GC on time.

Also, we do plan on driving into Canada during the summer at some point for a family trip, but will border agents on either side (Canada/U.S.)  give is a hard time about this?  Should we take the risk?

I will be honest and say that I did notice the mispelled name on his NOA1, but I failed to get it corrected during biometrics appointment, or even corrected during the interview, so will this be a problem trying to get the fees waived for the I-90 application?

I'm tempted to call USCIS directly and ask, but wanted to get info from here first.  Thank you!

So for all of those waiting to know the status.. this morning it changed to ISSUED!!! Now I'm a little confused about getting the visa and passport in hand. I believe we selected the option of picking it up at a certain location so will he be notified when his stuff is ready for pick up or do they mail anything?

My last question is for those who have already come over to the US. Do you think there will be any issues when he gets to customs since we used the ESTA and shouldn't have (but honestly didn't know and thought we were good) from his cautions. I guess that's my biggest concern because I've heard people saying that just because the visa is issued doesn't mean the US has to let him in....

Congratulations!  Now is the big next step to seeing him walk through those gates here on American soil! Cheers!

Btw, can you let me know the expedite process?

i already submitted the request of expedite a month ago, and just got an email from USCIS that they will reschedule my interview date.

Originally, My interview date was scheduled on July 1st, and i just got the email that they will reschedule it based on my expedition request.

I am confused because if they expedite my schedule, the interview will be this week.

also i am starting to get worried if they postpone my schedule after July 1st.

I don’t get the meaning of reschedule from USCiS email.

Did you receive a same email from USCIS after getting expedition approval?

I am trying to call them but still waiting for 40 mins on a line...

Yes, the expedite request was simple.  All you need to do is call USCIS and request over the phone.  As long as the expedite falls within the guidelines and griteria, then everything will work out fine.

I waited on the phone for almost an hour, it was bad but o well.  Once the expedite was submitted, we did receive an email stating that it was submitted, and from there we mailed the local USCIS office with the supporting documentation in regards to the expedite request.

Congrats!!! My husband had his interview on May 8th, he was approved but sent to Administrative Processing since then. I would like to understand that you requested an expedite for that?? If it so, I would like to have the example too. Many thanks.

    Hi everyone:

I'd like to know if there's anyone have experience with living in other country (your nationality) while I-751 pending?

My husband PCS to Korea with unaccompanied order for 1 year and I am planning to go back to live in Taiwan while he is in Korea, and I know I probably need to send out I-131 form (for re-entry permit) before I leave for Taiwan, other than that what else do I need to do to make sure I will have no problem come back to live in the US after 1 year?

    P.S.  I filed I-751 on 2019/06/18 and my 2 years GC expired 2019/08/31

Planning to leave around beginning of Oct. this year.

    Thank you so much!

Might need to provide a copy of your husband's orders, and possibly request expedite for the proccess.

    Hello all,

I promised updates and my fiance just left the embassy. It didn't go so well. The lady that interviewed him was extremely rude and wouldn't let him talk. She kept interrupting everything he said. She was going off saying he lied on ESTA. (I was worried about this since I later found out on this site that we shouldn't have used the ESTA but at the time of filling it out, we were going off his normal police certificate which stated NONE RECORDED in the box of "Convictions, Cautions, Reprimands, and Warnings") They ended up giving him a paper that says refused under section 221(g) for additional administrative processing for medical examination results. Apparently Knightsbridge had only received his letter from the psychiatrist today and will send it off tomorrow to the embassy.  I'm assuming that once they receive his medical, that's when they'll make their decision?

I'm really sorry to hear about your results @Pooley  I know after seeing alll the topics both you and your fiance were eager to get things done right and on point.  Hopefully this administrative proccessing goes by quick and both you and your fiance can both be together finally.  Please keep us updated..
