Hi, can anybody recommend a cross border tax accountant? I am now a US resident but still work for a Canadian employer. I am having trouble finding one that will take on my taxes...last place refused to do it saying it was too complicated. Thanks!

My fiance (US citizen, resides in the US) and I (Canadian citizen, resides in Canada) are trying to figure out the best route to take for immigration. We plan to reside in the US. I have been researching the best I can without a lawyer but it is quite confusing. Thankfully a kind Redditor pointed us in the direction of this website. Our goal is to be able to be together in person the quickest way possible, the cheapest way possible, and give me the quickest way to be eligible to work in the US. I thought the K1 was the quickest, cheapest, most straight forward (we could file without a lawyer, I could enter and move all my things upon entry), and would give me the ability to work but I believe I have something wrong there. Do you have any advice or knowledge about the two processes, the pros and cons? Thank you for your time.

Hi All! I just got formally accepted and got my sons and I's approved I-20 Forms as of today. I will be starting school on May 04. I have a few questions, I've looked through the threads and googled but I'm finding a variety of information so thought I would ask here. - As Canadians do not have a formal interview for F1, is there any specific paperwork we need to bring when we go through Customs besides the I-20 and passports obviously? (Would be flying to the U.S.) - If my son was to go back to Canada for a few weeks in the summer to visit his grandparents, would he have an issue re-entering? I'm assuming he'd need to bring his paperwork with him which is not an issue. Thanks so much!

The more I read the posts on VJ about filing taxes, the more I become confused as to what to do and how to proceed with filing taxes. I figured I might as well ask VJ while doing more research. Breakdown: What I understand so far: - AOS applicant can be considered a US resident alien having passed the substantial physical presence test. Thus, no need for something called an "election statement"?
- The $11,000 CAD is converted to USD but the taxes will be worked out like this (found from a different post but can't find the link anymore:
- Figure tax on all the income yours and his....$xxxx.xx
- Figure what tax would be on just his foreign income....$yyyy,yy
- Subtract $xxxxx minus $yyyyy and your actual real tax is the difference.
- It is basically letting you take off the amount of tax his added income generates.
- File form 2555EZ to exempt the foreign income
Questions: - AOS applicant has capital gains losses ($3,000) but is it possible to deduct that off of the USC taxes?
- What forms do I file?
- US: I believe it is W-4 and 2555EZ so far but I haven't dived any deeper yet.
- CAD: Haven't done too much research on this yet but...
- File a "Leaving Canada T1 return with CRA"
I believe I've listed the most important information and any help is appreciated!
