What is this world coming to?

Winter Solstice and christmas are two different holidays ;)

And so are the commercialized/secularized "Christmas" holiday season (which begins somewhere in October now  ) and Christ's Mass (which begins December 24 in the evening, and lasts 12 days).

Piggybacking off this somewhat, there's no debating that Xmas has become commercialised. This is a capitalist society, and consuming is good. With that in mind, it makes sense for large stores et al to secularize the greeting to become "Happy Holidays", in the knowledge that they are covering all bases and therefore making the biggest profit. It's never been about not wanting to offend anyone - it's about making money.

I don't know whether we'll see more "War on Xmas" type protests again this year. Personally, I don't understand why they weren't protesting outside stores about the commercialism of their religion, rather than the non-use of one word.

"It's not the years; it's the mileage." Indiana Jones

Yesterday department stores David Jones and Myers and the Westfield shopping centre chain moved to reassure children, and their parents, that Santa and his customary greeting was part of Christmas's present as well as Christmas's past.

A David Jones spokeswoman said they had discussed the situation with Westaff and their Santas would not be silenced.

"Senior management have assured us that Santas provided to David Jones have not been censored in any way," the spokeswoma said.

At Myer, where Westaff also train the fat men in red suit, Santa could not stop laughing about the suggestion.

"Myer has not directed our Santas to refrain from using 'ho, ho, ho' and believe the expression is an important Christmas tradition," a spokesman for Myer said.

Westfield's Santas are recruited and trained by RegProm Marketing and they will be "ho, ho, ho-ing" a Westfield spokeswoman said.

"Westfield Santas are known for their friendly and welcoming nature and know how to deliver a real festive 'ho, ho, ho'...

Westaff's national Santa co-ordinator Sari Hegarty wrote to stores explaining the company's position.

"Westaff has been a provider of quality caring Santas for over forty years," Ms Hegarty wrote in an email.

"Part of our advice to our Santas is that they should be mindful of children having their first Santa experience.

"We ask our Santas to try techniques such as lowering their tone of voice and using 'ha, ha, ha' to encourage the children to come forward and meet Santa. We wish you and your family a very merry Christmas."

That figures...another attempt at spreading fear that PC (whatever it means) is attacking Christmas.

Fat Santa a jolly poor role model

LYNDSAY MOSS HEALTH CORRESPONDENT (lmoss@scotsman.com)

THE festive image of a fat, jolly Santa could be sending out the wrong message in the fight against obesity, experts warned yesterday.

Estimates suggest that obesity and related illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes cost the NHS in Scotland more than £171 million a year.

But this is set to rise, with around 60 per cent of Scots already overweight or obese and likely to suffer future poor health as a result.

In a bid to raise awareness of the impact of abdominal obesity, drugs company Sanofi-aventis sponsored a poll of 40 Santas working in shopping centres across Scotland.

Research has shown that a waist circumference of more than 40in in men or 35in in women indicates an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

In the poll of Scottish Santas, the average waist circumference was 47in, with the figure rising to 48in in Dundee and 51in in Edinburgh.

Dr Miles Fisher, consultant physician at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, said: "Santa is the archetypal picture of abdominal obesity."

He added: "The image of Santa is of a round, jolly person and it is meant to be one of hilarity, but if you have obesity around your tummy, then it is very bad for you.

"Before, we thought it was just not good to be overweight, but now we know that having fat around your middle is particularly bad."

Later this week, Glasgow University is set to publish a report warning of the severe financial consequences of obesity on the NHS in the coming years.

Yes.

What is this world coming to?

Winter Solstice and christmas are two different holidays ;)

Yule (or the winter solstice) is on the 21st of December so it is a few days before the traditional Christian/Julian calendars placement of Christmas on the 25th.
