Hello Ladies...

Do any of you know any women that have become pregnant using an IUD?

If so, any stories to share??

I do know two people who had myriad problems after using IUDs--one attributed her fertility problems to having used one in 1980s (I think they're a bit better nowadays). I haven't heard too many good things about them generally. Just seeing a picture of one and imagining it amid my insides was enough to make me shudder. I guess I'm biased because the gynecologist I went to for years was not a fan and wouldn't offer them to his patients. I also used to have terrible cramps when I was younger, and it's common for IUDs to worsen cramping.

I guess this doesn't answer the question! I know this is kinda 1960s, but I like the diaphragm. It has many other uses: bathing cap for cats, mini frisbee, paper clip storage, etc.

My sister-in-law is very happy with hers, no pregnancies, no cramping and she barely has a period.

I've wanted to get one but I haven't had children yet and they're not recommended for women without children.

Mirena is the latest one; it is the most efficient form of contraception on the market barring having your tubes tied etc. It reduces your periods to virtually nothing (and thusly reduces cramping) and lasts for 5 years. It's made of plastic too, so no nasty pieces of metal are jammed up your insides. Recommended for use only on women who have had children and are in a steady relationship.

Laura ~ I'm betting that this is the one your sister-in-law has.

I think it'd be one before that, since she's about to get it removed after 5 years, the mirena is still rather new in the market, and we're also talking Brazil here, dunno even if we'd have brazilian IUDs.

It's still more recent than 1995, so I guess it's safe to say IUDs are WAY better now than they used to be. I'll prolly get myself one after I have my children, not sure I'll commit to permanent tying up my tubes or having hubby get a vasectomy.

Actually you can get an IUD even if you haven't had children (nullipara), although insertion will probably be more painful, and it is sometimes recommended for women who have pain due to endometriosis. But as Mags said, it's only for women who are in a monogomous relationship due to the higher risk of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) for those who have sex with multiple partners.

And the Mirena does get replaced every five years.

I used one after the birth of my first son, then had it removed to conceive my second son....then had another one and it stayed with me until I finished my menopause. So I used one for 20+ years without any problems (or unwanted pregnancies) whatsoever. The one they gave me was called a 'Lipis Loop' (think that's how you spell it) and it was made from plastic and could stay in place for many, many years...and it did...all I needed was a 3 year check-up to make sure it was still in place.

The only thing I remember happening was that for the 1st few months after it was put in, I had heavy periods....but they soon returned to normal.

I really would recommend one, especially now as the technology is much more advanced than it was in the late 70's.

They just look way too strange for me to want something stuck inside me like that for who knows how long. And then there's that string! While I was working at the Womens Health Clinic I cannot even begin to tell you how many women would say "I feel like I have a foreign object in my body!" Uhhhh....yeah, you do! I know a lot of women rave about the Mirena and barely have a period, and others that cramping and spotting non-stop.
