if you watch enough movies you can tell who's scottish, english or welsh, or irish

trainspotting - teh scottish

hot fuzz - teh english

angela's ashes - teh oirish

Welshh.. I dunno any movie, just listen to christian bale when he's not acting

Well, Christian Bale probably isn't the best example. His accent is very Americanized!

till, no since getting all worked up at a Filipina that wouldn't have a clue between English, Irish, Welsh or blink.gif

True that!

Many people here have referred to me as "European", I think that's casting the net a little too far. I remind them that it's not all states of the same country like the US is but usually they've lost interest in the conversation by then anyway..

People are right about it being a trend to rip on Americans. Many of my "friends" were very insulting about me moving and marrying :( I mean I can have a joke with them but I can have a joke about some of the things Brits do too...we all have weaknesses and silly quirks. Superiority complex is just annoying...

Yeah. Just get Twin Town or something else with Rhys Iffans when he's not putting on an accent.

Real love stories never have endings...

Kez!

And, yeah a lot of Welsh would be insulted if you called them English. And I can only imagine the look on an Englishman's face if you called them Welsh. But that's certainly no reason to be rude to anyone.

The Welsh accent is loverly! Almost as good as a Scottish one if you ask me. But then again I studied in Swansea and may be a bit biased.

As for movies, some of my favorite include:

The Last Days of Dolwyn

How Green Was My Valley

The Corn Is Green

The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain

Not all of them are stunning examples of Welsh accents, but mostly entertaining to watch nevertheless.

*runs off to put Twin Town on the Netflix queue*

Nice going, Kez!

I don't have anything against the British (in fact, I like the UK). However, it seems a bit absurd to come to the U.S. (or any country) and get annoyed when the local population behaves as it normally does. It's their country! If you don't like it, don't go there! Seems easy enough to understand.

Every day I go to a little street cafe for my lunch.... over the last few years I have met all sorts of people, most here in Boston on vacation... I enjoy meeting people from other countries and find most are very pleasant and enjoy the chance to ask questions about Boston, I now have a good list of the best places to buy certain things and how to get around Boston in the cheapest way. So I enjoy my 1 hour lunch and love to share my info with the people I meet....

Ok so yesterday they I am sitting having my lunch when a group of 3 ladies ask if they could share my table... Sure I said and moved my stuff so they could get in... I could tell they came for England and from their accents I guessed the south west area maybe Cheltenham... they were well spoken and very well dressed.. so once they had ordered their lunch I asked them "Where abouts in England are you from"? All 3 of them looked at me and one replied "I dont think that is any of your business" she then turned to her friends and said in a very loud voice "I WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND WHY THE AMERICANS ARE SO GOD DAMN NOSY" I was totally shocked!!!! I ate the rest of my lunch and listened to them talk about their Bridge Club and how the thought their racing horses would do next season.... Well when I finished my lunch I got up to go back to work and I turned to them and said "For your information I am British and it is people like you who make me remember what it is about Stuck-up English Snobs I dislike... if you dont like the way you are treated by Americans then dont come to America.... I am sure it will survive with out you.... Have a wonderful vacation and feel free to never come back to Boston"

God it made me feel better...... Can you believe some people..

Kez

The time I have spent in Thailand, I ran in to similar circumstances. Treating the people there as if they should bow down to them. Pathetic. By the way...it seemed to be a "European" thing that I seen occur. Not from any one particular country.

See, it's people like them that give us 'British' a bad name  and a reputation for having a stiff upper lip! There are far too many people like that here in England (The owner of the hotel I work in for one :ranting:) and it really pisses me off.

I can never understand why people have to be so rude!

Well done for giving them a piece of your mind and for being civil and not smooshing your lunch in her face... I might not have been so reserved :innocent:

I would have loved to have seen their faces when you walked away though!

Well done Kez!!!!!!!!

Those women need to get over themselves  Here you were being hospitable and then they were so rude. I'm kinda surprised they assumed you were American though, i'd reckon you still have a quite strong Scottish accent.
