How sweet she is, I have always liked Ellen. It's crazy how people will go by the book even in situations that are clearly good for the dog and the shelter.

She explains why she had to give the dog away, who she gave the dog to and begs the society to give the dog back to the family she gave it to saying it wasn't their fault, it was all her fault for going about re homing the dog the wrong way, but it was for all the right reasons and the dog would be happy in and well looked after in the new home.

LOS ANGELES - Ellen DeGeneres' doggy drama intensified Tuesday after her tearful plea on her talk show led to death threats against the rescue group that took back her adopted dog for violating the contract, according to a spokesman for the agency's owners.

DeGeneres explained on her show that the Brussels Griffon terrier mix didn't get along with her cats, so she gave it to her hairstylist's family. The owners of Mutts and Moms claimed that DeGeneres violated the adoption agreement by not informing them that she was giving the dog away and removed Iggy from the hairstylist's home Sunday.

As a result of the publicity, Marina Batkis and Vanessa Chekroun received voice mail and e-mail threats of death and arson and were besieged by the media, disrupting business at Paws Boutique store in Pasadena, where they handle the volunteer, nonprofit rescue agency, attorney Keith A. Fink said.

Batkis rejected DeGeneres' plea to give the dog back to her hairstylist's family.

"She (Batkis) doesn't think this is the type of family that should have the dog," said Fink, who is not legally representing the owners but is authorized to speak for them. "She is adamant that she is not going to be bullied around by the Ellen DeGenereses of the world ... They are using their power, position and wealth to try to get what it is they want."

DeGeneres' attorney, Kevin Yorn, did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

"It's very upsetting to hear that someone is getting those kind of calls," DeGeneres' publicist Kelly Bush said. "Ellen just wants the dog reunited with the family."

On her talk show taped Tuesday and airing Wednesday, a serious DeGeneres reiterated to her audience that "the dog needs to go to the family."

It "just needs to be in a good home," she continued, according to a transcript given to The Associated Press. "All that you're supposed to do is put a dog in a loving home."

DeGeneres had said her hairdresser's daughters, ages 11 and 12, had bonded with Iggy and were heartbroken when the dog was taken away.

Fink said Moms and Mutts has a rule that families with children under 14 are not allowed to adopt small dogs.

"It's for the protection of the dog," he said.

My neighbour who runs a pet care business is familiar with some of these rescues - some of the people who run them are a few biscuits short of a doggy bag. Some of them have higher criteria for pet adoptions than most people who adopt children go through.

I would think Ellen would be smart enough actually to read something that she signs her name to. Unfortunately, people who have "people to do things for them", aren't big on details and the bottom line is she breached a contractual agreement.

The matter should have been handled privately instead of her making a big scene on her show. In my opinion, it was to draw attention & sympathy. So, I guess the big crying/ drama thing was a success. She seemed to have garnered sympathy from fans, which is exactly what she was aiming for. Don't forget, this woman acts as a profession.

I do rescue work with ferrets, and although I haven't any problems with adopting to anyone with children, it is ultimately the decision of the organization reagrding whom the pet is placed with, and it states so in my contract.

If I were to place any of my ferrets to a home without kids, and subsequently the pet was "given" to someone with kids, I would have an issue- simply because I would have no idea how the animal interacts with children. Sometimes an animal may not hurt the kids, but the animal may be stressed by the activity level of children.

I agree with the rescue that if the contract is breached, the organization has every right to remove the pet.

By the way, most small scale rescues are not shelters, where animals are made to live in cages. They are foster homes-within a home setting.

Ellen's "boo-hoo, poor me" B.S. doesn't work with me. She had NO RIGHT to do what she did.

Go ahead, let the flames begin... but I stick to my guns on this one.
