See...I absolutely HATE that word.......

So I just don't use it. You can't dictate what other people say because you have a sensitivity to it...you just choose not to use it yourself.

EXACTLY!!!

Many are sensitive to some words and not others. If someone doesn't truly see what the say as offensive, how can they be "more considerate" or "more careful" in their choice of words?

Where does it stop? If someone says "are you BLIND" is that offensive to someone that cannnot see, "are you DEAF" to someone that cannot hear? Because words or phrases are "triggers" to someone that knows someone that this refers to doesn't mean that others are as affected by those particular words. It isn't as if that person goes around jeering at those that ARE actually blind, deaf or retarded. It's getting so we have to walk on eggshells because of something we say, without meaning to be offensive, could be offensive to someone.

Sure, there are words and phrases that bother me at times that I have heard or even seen here on VJ, but that is just my viewpoint. I'm not going to expect someone to change the way they think or talk because of that or mention it to them. Otherwise, we would have to "pin" a topic on no-no words for every VJ member.

pj1959us: You hit it spot on.

Personally I learn to let things slide. Sadly we have this thing called "freedom of speech" and people can say anything they like whenever they like. Included the word "retard". I use it constantly. Why? I was brought up with it. Now I had handicapped friends in school and even THEY Would call people retards. So frankly I have a hard time being sensitive when words are words.

All of you are fidjinklenarfs. ALL OF YOU!!!!!!!!!!

It's a word, just a word and at the end of the day it means only what you WANT it to mean.

Get over it and focus on something in life that actually matters, like the house failing to overturn the low income childrens health bill veto.

tolerant (adj) showing respect for the rights or opinions or practices of others

or

tolerance (noun)

1. a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions, practices, race, religion, nationality, etc., differ from one's own; freedom from bigotry.

2. a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward opinions and practices that differ from one's own.

3. interest in and concern for ideas, opinions, practices, etc., foreign to one's own; a liberal, undogmatic viewpoint.

4. the act or capacity of enduring; endurance: My tolerance of noise is limited.

If being "tolerant" in your eyes makes me a "leftist being held back by political correctness" I'd have to say you're full of poop. Tolerance works right in with my personal Christian beliefs too.

My panties aren't in a wad, but I had to point out that "tolerance" isn't a bad thing.

Even reading this hasn't offended me coz I can't work up enough caring to care about being told I'm full of poop for my view of this. Some folks just enjoy being offended and complaining about it.

*sigh*

I guess this needs to be repeated from Cassie's last post....

"My point in posting what I did was a simple wish wrapped up in a mini rant. A wish that people would think before they speak. That they consider what words they use, not just because they could be hurtful to others, but how it might reflect on them as the person using them.

Do I expect that everyone on VJ will read this thread and say "Well, because Cassie hates this word and wishes we wouldn't use it, I won't use it" ? Heck no, I'm not that naive. Am I surprised that some think I'm too sensitive, I need to develop a thicker skin, etc etc etc? Nope, not at all.

Do I hope that people read this thread and think about the words that come out of their mouths? Heck yes."

This has nothing to do with freedom of speech, or a VJ word/phrase ban list, or needing more of a life....

VJ sheesh...

It's derogatory and unnecessary. Use another word!!!!!!!

Isn't that the point of using that word? It is SUPPOSED to be derogatory or insulting? When people use it, I would expect them to WANT to get that rise out of you. NO?

No. it's offensive. It makes a mockery of people who have mental disabilities, IMHO. My sister-in-law has a precious precious niece who was born with Down's Syndrome, and her sweet face flashes in my mind whenever I see that word.

I somewhat agree with you, however....

"No. it's offensive. It makes a mockery of people who have mental disabilities, IMHO."

Since the PC people (who rule Earth and all other planets) have removed the word "retarded" as a word used to describe people with "mental challenges", "learning difficulties", or who are "differently abled", then you cannot take offense at the word "retarded" being used in any context. It no longer means awhat it used to. It means what the other definitions say... "my progress along the trail was retarded by the climb", "the timing on my car was so retarded that it wouldn't pull itself up the driveway", etc.

"My sister-in-law has a precious precious niece who was born with Down's Syndrome, and her sweet face flashes in my mind whenever I see that word."

Then THAT is your issue. Me, I don't associate Down's Syndrome with retardation - I associate it with a (genetic) birth defect. I suppose DS could technically be considered a form of retardation, but I don't immediately picture someone with DS when I hear the word.

Now, to stir the pot even more, why do people get upset when the word "retarded" is "taken" and used in a different context, but NOT get upset that we can no longer use the words "gay", "#######", "faggot", "denigrate", "niggardly" they way they were originally meant because they have been appropriated or deemed "racist"?

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.
