Sorry if this counts as “necroposting,” but it’s worth asking why California’s budget decisions draw so much criticism from people who don’t live there. State budgets are shaped by the voters and taxpayers within that state, and California’s reflects the priorities of its residents.

 

More broadly, the U.S. system is built on the idea of federalism—states having the authority to govern themselves in many areas. California has a left-leaning supermajority, and its voters have consistently supported policies that align with that perspective. Whether others agree or not, those choices are part of the state’s democratic process.

 

At the same time, it’s important to apply that principle consistently. Following the Supreme Court’s decision to return abortion policy to the states, many of the same arguments about state autonomy have been used to defend differing approaches across the country. If states’ rights and local control are the standard, they should apply across the board—even when the outcomes differ from one’s personal views.

The level of naïveté here is a little disconcerting. In my experience, the vast majority of any given electorate are tribal in nature, and will vote for their party, Democrat or Republican, no matter what. And those who do consider policy positions, rarely take more than 25% into account.

 

Independent voters will generally look more into those policy positions, but there are also those who will vote against someone for whom they have an inherent dislike, rational or not.

 

Notwithstanding any of the above, politicians rarely maintain a good proportion of their policy positions once elected, Governor Spanberger of Virginia being a current and salient case in point.

 

In my opinion, state budgets are shaped more by those in power wishing to retain that power than in consideration of the benefit to their constituents. If that means working to appease minority opinions which garner disproportionately vocal media attention, then that is the direction policy will trend.

 

Thinking that elected representatives work primarily to represent their electorate, especially in the current political climate, is hopelessly idealistic. Politicians, by and large, represent themselves first and foremost, with their electorate being merely an afterthought.

 

i may be cynical, and tomorrow is Monday, my day reserved for cynicism, but I’ve worked with enough politicians to have earned a pass grade on my Cynics 101 class. ☠️
