Location: California

(I posted few weeks ago that my physical extension letter got misdelivered)

I wanted to share an update regarding my driver’s license renewal with Real ID.

My license was set to expire on 8/13/25, and I renewed it online on 7/17. I was pre-approved by uploaded the digital version of the Receipt of Notice. However, since I was also renewing my Real ID, I had to appear in person at a DMV field office.

During my visit to the DMV on 7/23, the staff informed me that my Green Card had expired just 5 days beyond the 60-day window. They explained that if it had been more than 60 days, I would only need to show the Green Card and wouldn’t need the extension letter. Since my Green Card expired on 9/17, I was quite frustrated by the response.

I then visited a different DMV, where they accepted just my Green Card—no questions about the extension letter!!

I received my new DL with Real ID yesterday! I'm still not sure if I met the requirement exactly (pre-approval on the last day of the 60-day window), or if I simply got lucky with the second DMV.

Hope this helps others in a similar situation.

Posting here as I have a pretty crazy timeline!

July 11th - Application Submitted

July 18th - Biometrics Appointment Scheduled

August 25th - I-751 approved

My understanding was this would take 18-24 months so a little surprised (and of course very happy), that this got approved so quickly 🙂

Congrats! You had right expectations, and it's amazing it got approved so quickly!

Congratulations.  Be grateful.  We had to wait 44 months.....no RFEs.
