Why do you have to update your DL?

My state's voter registration rolls are tied to citizenship status in the DMV database. My license also has certain restrictions around renewal and replacement — I have to go in-person to do that. But if I update my citizenship status, I can renew or get a replacement license by clicking a button online.

I got my citizenship interview today at 10 AM, FO Boston. The officer was extremely nice and polite. There were basic questions like my name, phone number, address, if I got out of the country in the past 3 years. But basically he was just answering the questions and I was agreeing. He asked me six civics questions (I got them all right):

1. Who does a U.S. Senator represent?

2. When must all men register for the Selective Service?
3. What happened at the Constitutional Convention?
4. Who was the first President?
5. Where is the Statue of Liberty?
6. What major event happened on September 11, 2001, in the United States?

I had to read 'The first President of the United States was George Washington' and write 'Washington was the first President'.

Then he proceeded to ask me all of those question from the N-400 form, like, if I'm a terrorist, if I have been arrested, if I am willing to bear arms for the US, etc.

Lastly he said that he was recommending my case for approval and asked how would I like to have a same-day oath. I was extremely pleased and had my ceremony in the same building at 11 AM. And that was it! End of an 11-year saga!

Had my interview today, the officer was very pleasant but thorough, we went through every single question in the application.

I had to change some answers during the interview as I didn't disclose a couple of traffic citations I had gotten in the past in the online application, and it was not an issue.

The officer also questioned me about a trip that I had taken out of the US and I had to be honest that I did not remember that trip. However, I was able to find the exact dates based on passport stamps and they matched what the officer saw in the monitor, so this also wasn't an issue.

These are the civics questions I got:

- How many U.S. Senators are there?

- What are the two major parties?

- What did the Declaration of Independence do?

- What is one reason colonists came to America?

- What happened at the Constitutional Convention?

- What was one important thing that Abraham Lincoln did?

At the end of the interview, the officer said my application would need to go through review and I was given the interview results sheet saying that a decision could not be made at the time. I checked my case status after getting home and it had already cycled through "We recommended that your Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, be approved" and "Oath Ceremony Will Be Scheduled", so I think I'm approved. Happy to be done with this, but now I don't know what to do with all the brain capacity that has now been freed from worrying about immigration scrutiny every single day.

Had my Oath ceremony yesterday, no issues, now a Citizen. Waited 1.5 months since my approval / invite, felt like a long time and in the current climate we were nervous as nothing is guaranteed until you take the Oath.

I had a two week vacation back to the UK during the period between and this was noted when I attended but it was no big deal.

Oath ceremony was held in a local high school, and was attended by lots of state and local city delegates including the state Adjunct General (head of the state’s National Guard) who made a speech. There were 60 of us, and the two federal judges who oversaw the proceedings came out swinging in their speeches, which brought me to tears. It was reassuring to see that whilst Ohio is a red state we have some people who recognise the importance of immigration in our national makeup.

It was a beautiful ceremony and I feel very lucky to have been part of it.

We got our letter for our appointment. The letter states in all caps '**NO GUESTS**'. Is that of concern to anyone or is that normal? It's for the Troy, Michigan field office, which is pretty sizable, which makes me feel a little more suspicious. Has anyone experienced that with no issues in the end?

Normal.

My ceremony didn't allow guests.

Guests can meet you after to celebrate.

Good luck!

My invite made no mention of guests, and I had 5 people come with me, no issues. They had a large seating area for guests. This was probably due to it being one of several ceremonies they hold outside of the courthouse, where they are usually conducted.

Did invite also say '**No Guests**' in your case?

Glad it worked out, but imagine taking people with you (they may need to make time for this) to only discover they cannot be present at oath ceremony?

I think it would be a rude thing to do, but it's just me.

As I said, ‘my invite made no mention of guests’; it did not say whether they were allowed and it did not say they were not allowed. To be clear the word ‘guest’ or any of its synonyms do not appear in my Oath ceremony invite. Neither was there any other reference to a public gallery, viewing area or facility for non petitioners.

With this in mind, my family knew they may have to wait in their cars should they not be allowed to observe, and it was their choice to accompany me.

I try and ensure that I accommodate my family’s needs & wishes where I can, maybe that’s just me.

In the end the ceremony was an open public affair, with no limits on guests, we even had a group of the high school kids observe from bleachers.

Why do you have to update your DL?

Virginia does not require you to update your DL, but they hand out 10 year licenses to conditional green card holders. So most 2-year GC holders will have a 10 year license and about 7 to 8 years left after the ROC is approved.  When you finally renew your license and have become a citizen in those years, it will throw an error message on the application. On the renewal form you have stated you are now a citizen and the system stills think you are a LPR. Easy enough to fix if you have your passport with you. Otherwise you'll have to come back again (according to the clerk the naturalization certificate can not be used to bypass the error, it needs a passport number.)

There are also states that have wording on the license stating it is "limited" or "restricted" (based on them not viewing conditional LPR's as "real" LPR's) some people would like to have that wording removed after becoming a citizen.

As stated above not uncommon.

Also completely understandable and I think it's fair.  USCIS field offices generally do not have giant halls to accommodate a large amount of applicants with guest. I feel it's better to pack the room with more applicants and forgo the guests. Anything to help speed up the process for people waiting to take the oath.

We just had a giant party in the back yard after I came back from the ceremony.
