How AI is revolutionizing Internet fraud and romance scams

Federal investigators warn that a new wave of romance scammers is using artificial intelligence to generate fake photos, audio, and even videos. This technological advancement makes it easier to pull off a romance scam and harder to spot one.

Rao said, "It's chilling and it makes it hard for law enforcement to intervene."

Prosecuting romance scammers can be challenging, in large part because many of them operate overseas. However, federal prosecutors have shown they will pursue cases aggressively when they have the opportunity. In 2021, 35 people in North Texas were indicted on federal charges related to romance scams that stole $17 million from more than 100 victims nationwide. In March, one of the women involved in the scheme received a 10-year prison sentence and was ordered to pay $2 million in restitution.

If you have become a victim, experts say to contact your bank right away and tell them what happened. Also, report the crime to the Federal Trade Commission.

That's why I prefer to keep it robot-level, plenty of romance, no immigration risk, just sadness when the server dies.

A widow who handed her life savings to an online romance fraudster said she would struggle to "ever trust anybody again" after the £50,000 scam.

Retired mother-of-two Lyn, 60, from Warrington, Cheshire, was taken in by a man she met on a social media page for widows and widowers in May 2021.

'Derek', who claimed he was a Manchester-based businessman, manipulated Lyn before asking for cash.

Lyn said she "felt sick" and "couldn't believe" what had happened to her.

Across England and Wales last year there were 7,660 cases of romance fraud - up from 4,842 in 2019.

All police force areas have seen an increase in the past five years - in the North West, the number of cases has risen by 70%.

Lyn, who lost her husband of 25 years in 2019, said she never suspected any wrongdoing until it was too late.

I remember listening to Radio 5 and they has a half hour on it, I would imagine it is common everywhere.

After loosing my husband i joined a penpail site

i finally quit it after being bombarded by scammers

some using same photo as others

my house phone was still active and in my name and one guy looked my number up

his call showed UK number but that was explained to me by a girl i met that told me

"scammers from anywhere can have a friend in another country send a SIMS card like from the US and the number will show as UK"

if u get messages or talk online to anyone here's some hints

1. don't let someone call u baby that's so they don't have to remember who they are talking to at any moment as scammers talk all day

2. don't send photos thru emails as there they can copy and use them to create new profiles

3. don't fall for the i am alone (no parents,  spouse died and i have 1 child)    A very popular profile

4. learn what country (state) the person is in  and ask about it /  if it takes time to answer , they are looking it up

5. ask  simply "what time is it there now?"  and again ,  know what  time it should be and hesitation means they are looking it up

6.  when scammers give u a song to listen to as its a favorite ,  its a way of keeping u busy as another prospect has come online

7.  online scammers will not talk on cam

8. don't send money or gifts of any kind
