Can I enter the US to activate visa and immediate return to Canada?

Morning everyone!

I am lucky enough to live right by a land crossing to the US and I'm curious as to if I go across to activate it, can I immediately come back to Canada to complete my packing? I ask because I have a job waiting for me in the US and they would like to get the HR contract and logistics completed ASAP.

Would it cause issues for a customs agent to see that on my file when I fly permanently? I would likely only be in Canada for an additional week max.

Thanks in advance!!!

A few people have asked this before, myself included. There should not be an issue but there was 1 story about a lady who crossed at 1000 Island and the border officer was very frustrated that she was just crossing for her stamp and returning, so much so that they didn’t stamp her visa which I do not believe is legally allowed.

My attorney has told me to try and get stamped as soon as you receive the visa so I will be doing what you plan to do also.

I’ll let others chime in.

Oh gosh! I couldn't find a thread about that. Sorry everyone!! That's stressful if that happens. I hope it doesn't! I'll hold for additional folks to chime in before I go ahead and do that.

You should be fine, as this is fairly common.  If you read through all 11 pages of the thread in the thread provided, there was much more to the story there.  If you are coming to activate your LPR status and the CBPO asks questions like that, just answer truthfully that you need to tie up your loose ends in Canada, but you also needed to trigger your LPR status ASAP due to you US job offer.

Good Luck!

Just called my border crossing LOL. The officer was hilarious:

"You need to be seeking admission to the United States. Do NOT tell us you are turning right back around. Go get a drink, go get gas, go to Wal-Mart, but do NOT tell us you are turning right back around. Do you see what I'm saying?" LOL.

She was hilarious. I think I'm just going to save the hassle and do everything at once haha. I'm glad she was funny and nice.

This is so valuable… do you mind sharing your land crossing?

I agree with the BO, don't over share. All that is needed is I'm moving to the US and here's my visa. Anything just makes a mess.

I am one of the people who endorsed my visa and went right back to Canada. I don't believe at any point I said I was going right back, I just showed up and said I was endorsing a CR-1 visa and importing my car. They made me wait for about 45 minutes in secondary, but after that, it was easy peasy. I literally crossed, did a U-turn, and went right back to Canada.

Bingo!!!!   There has been one case I can remember in which over-sharing created a huge problem in this very situation..

That was an interesting one, he appeared on Hacking then here and there seemed to be gaps in the story nobody could quite get to the bottom of and no update.
