CNN)After four years of deliberation, a university in southern Ohio has agreed to pay a professor $400,000 after initially disciplining him for his refusal to use a transgender student's preferred pronouns, according to the school and a news release from the professor's attorney.

The settlement means Nicholas Meriwether, a philosophy professor at Shawnee State University, will not be required to use certain pronouns regardless of a student's request, according to the release from his attorney.

Deliberation is an interesting term, sets an interesting precedent. Legal fees would have been heavy, maybe $1m ish.

Shawnee University released a statement on the settlement, saying it was an "economic decision."

Things I wonder... Did they only settle because the lawsuit was dragging out for so long?

And are they going to reverse the policy they introduced in 2016 or does the settlement/decision only relate to Meriwether?

It would seem the university has to reverse the policy given the precedent they set with this settlement.  How could they enforce the policy against another professor while not enforcing it on Meriweather?

I would have addressed each student as Comrade Smith.  Even the ones who weren’t named Smith.

That's still fostering an unsafe environment for students. Everyone deserves to be recognized by the name they choose!

Other news sources stated Meriwether would refer to students by the last name as a compromise and the student said that wasn't good enough....

I did some googling and see " The university adopted a non-discrimination policy on April 12, 2019, that prohibits discrimination because of gender identity. There is no specific preferred pronoun policy."

So, they updated their policy...

It’s a philosophy course. Calling each student comrade Winston smith is merely an exercise of academic freedom and good old fashioned book learnin.

I got a D in philosophy (turned into a B when I got my grades translated for a US based grad school) so I know its a useless subject ;)

Some high school teacher, in Texas I think, got $450K yesterday over the same thing.

On another note, American never ceases to amaze me. How on earth do you demand that you get called a certain name yet it's not even your legal name? And the complain and get some fired?

I read an article of a lady who works as a bikini barista. She claims it gives her confidence. If someone can convince me how your boobs hanging out beneath your bra and you almost being completely naked down there gives you confidence, I'll sell me car. She then said her old teacher and people from local church are frequent visitors..🤣🤣🤣

People nowadays do ridiculous things and line up  "meant-to-be uplifting" PR rhetoric statements to support their actions.

What amused me is how this can be used, say you want out or even to top up your pension etc the perfect opportunity

I want to know how much Meriwether paid in legal fees or did he (are his pronouns he???) have some right-wing/christian group backing his cause.

University realized he had much deeper pockets than they did... And they decide to pay the 400K...

Did he get the full 400K or is that money going to "a cause"....

My favored address from a teacher was "dumba**".  The only problem with that address was that multiple folks would generally respond.
