The I-485 only needs to be filed if the beneficiaries are already living in the US. If they're living abroad, there is no need to file the I-485.

How long is the waiting time. ? I  am going to file a petition for my parents.

Depends on a service center, but generally about a year: https://egov.uscis.gov/processing-times/

Submitted for both of my parents on 18 Jan 2022. As of right now Case was received and a receipt notice was sent status.

 

Also found out today that they went to two different Service Center one in Potomac and the other  in Nebraska. Is there anyone else here who has had a similar experience?

OK, I figured it out. It is with National Benefits Center. We filed I-130 for my mom in Jan. Priority date 1/12/2022. Not sure why it was sent to NBC. I read in the forums that NBC takes forever. Is there anything we can do to get the case moved from NBC to any other service center?

I too submitted for my parents on January 31, 2022 with I485. Received A Receipt also, waiting for next step.
