Has anyone changed their last name for the one of your future husband/wife before the actual wedding?

i've thought about doing it so I can change all my documentation in my home country, but my main questions are:

Would it affect in some way the visa process?

if not, would I need to do it before sending the I-129 package?

Thanks in advanced.

Usually it's done after the marriage by filling out the I-485, I-765, and I-131 forms with the new married name. The marriage certificate is used as proof of the legal name change.

Still apply for the SSN as soon as you can after entering the US with your maiden name:

Then update it with married name after the EAD or GC is issued.

If you have the same last name on the I129F petition, it could raise questions as to whether you are already married.

I see a potential problem with getting a visa. At the interview, the interviewing officer might find it odd that you took your fiancé’s last name without marrying. He might rightly assume that you have gotten married and changed your name (which is typically how it’s done). I have seen plenty of people be denied when the consular officer gets a whiff of a suspicion that people might have gotten married. So why risk just to change some documents that don’t even need changing in the first place?

edit: just realized that you didn’t yet send your petition. Just like @Jorgedig pointed out, you might not even get past the USCIS stage if they send an RFE for proof of marriage.

With what base? You can not go to the Registro Civil or any place like that and ask for change your last name.
I don’t think it’s possible without marring. And if you marry you are not able to get the K1 visa

An ignorant officer that does whatever they want without consequence.

Facts often aren't as important as the opinion an officer has.  That is the basis for a lot of the crazy things we have to do.

Also, I do understand why the applicant might want to do this.  Often it's much easier to do the name change in their home country than doing it in the states.  Just why do something that could cause an issue, whether or not you are right or wrong.

Still had this page open, and when I came back I realized I misunderstood you.  I answered as if you were saying what is the base for it being bad to change your name.  But you meant under what base can you change the name.  Sorry for the confusion.

It depends on the country.  Like in Cambodia you can change either your first or last name anytime you want without giving any reason.

Don’t worry.
I really advise you to don’t do it because will looks like you are “too married “ to the K1. It’s your choice but this can make you lose time and money.

Just a note that brevig is now married and is going to do CR-1 process.

hahaha, sorry, I misquoted PaulaCJohnny and she/he logically misquoted me back (both of us voicing the same opinion).

Just to clarify I think it would be foolish for fernandamt18@gmai to change their name before getting married.  It will just cause unneeded issues.

Sorry for the confusion.  Anyways, I think consensus is unanimous, DO NOT DO IT.  Get married first.  Don't introduce confusion.
