Temporary Work Permit While N-400 Processing

I do not think you will get one.

You card is the one that expired. You status hasn't. So you still have legal status. Go to work as normal. Nobody will ask you for your status. If HR does, show them N400 receipt and tell them you filed for citizenship.

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

Ok, I am going to show the n-400 receipt and see what they say. I am not certain how many in HR understand this concept that the PR status is still valid , of they don't then the burden of proof is on me to convince. Thanks for the reply!

Are they asking for it or are you broadcasting your GC expiry to them?

A 10-year expiration date and should not be reverified.

A two-year expiration date and should not be reverified if the card unexpired when the employee completes their Form I-9.

Why are you even showing your green card? An employee gets to decide what to show to the HR for employment purposes. A valid driver’s license and a SSN card without restrictions is all you need.

You guys are correct to point out that I do not have to show them GC , all i need to show is Dl and SSN . Thank you so much for clearing this out. The collective wisdom at this forum is beyond words!

My employer required a permanent resident card. I gave them my SSN and everything, but they still required the green card (I guess the SSN they used to verify my work eligibility might have shown them I was a permanent resident or something--not sure). Not sure if it's legal, but that's what was required.

You may want to read up on I-9 and what employer is authorized to do or not and what rights you have as a permanent resident.

On a related topic, I am getting ready to purchase a house. Is the bank going to want to see some proof if they are going to give me a loan? Like you guys say, my status is still valid but I do not have anything to show as proof?

I recently purchased a house. Underwriting will absolutely ask for your scanned green card. Even though you can function without a valid GC in your everyday life, you would still need to prove your status for a loan. The n400 doesn't constitute as a proof, as some suggested, because it's just an application that can be denied.

I imagine that you can still purchase the house within the remaining validity of your card. It would check the box for them, even if it expires the next day.
