And add to all of that... regardless of what service your home currently has now, you MAY need to increase the amperage depending on what you are running and when.  If your home's AC runs constantly all day (I know mine does, except when I switch between units to give one a break), and you use your microwave and electric stove while the ceiling fans and lights are on, plus someone is taking a shower using that electric water heater... peak demand may be too much with an EV plugged in.

I hate to think about the Texas power grid in these circumstances.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

A lot of the “green” local governments are banning gas service for new construction, and I imagine at some point they will try to wind down existing gas service.  In our house, we are all electric except for the furnace and HWH, so looking into it, I would need to run a new service to handle an EV as I am potentially maxed out on my current 200 amp service, and also run a 220V service to the garage.

Lucky for me I have 400 amp service, which is 2 200 amp panels.

LOL.  Some years ago we had friends visiting in their motorhome.  We plugged them into our system.  Also was doing laundry, kids taking showers, water heater going, submersible pump in the well going, and maybe the pool pump working.  Tripped one 200 amp main breaker.  My friend commented "hate to see your electric bill if you can trip a 200 amp breaker"

I noticed at my brother’s place in the Venice area, they do not have gas service.  They are thinking about burying a propane pig to support a standby generator.

We don't have gas service at our house.  Several years ago they did run a line down from Tampa, but very few homes are connected.  Mostly business that are connected although some of the new gated communities have it now for cooking and hot water.

I know a lot of people that have done that.  I thought briefly about it but I've done fine with my gasoline powered generators.  Over the years we only seem to get a strong enough storm (hurricane) to knock out power for several days on average every twelve years or so.  Just figure I don't need to spend the money for that.  I've been fine with what I have.

Back to the original article: a smart grid+ economically viable storage+renewables is the path forward.  Solar would have saved Texas's bacon.

Another point as we got off track with electric vehicles. The storage capacity inside one of these can run small house for a few days, that would have been nice to have during your grid collapse.

Close, but no cigar.

Meanwhile, in Australia...

A massive fire has reportedly broken out at Australia’s largest Tesla battery project and is set to burn throughout the night. A toxic smoke warning has been issued in the area of the fire, which one fire official said could burn for eight to 24 hours.

What always seems to be forgotten is the amount of dirty mining/manufacturing necessary for renewable energy sources.  A mix of renewables with reliable base load power such as hydro or nuclear would seem to be the better fit overall.  As stated earlier, the original article does not give enough details regarding the chemistry of these batteries, what is their life cycle, what space is required per MW.
