Hi all,

I won the dv-2022 with case number AS6xxx.
I also admitted to the school and will be starting Master degrees in the US from this fall.
I am now thinking obtaining F1 first, and then processing Green Card after successfully entering the US.
However I've already started filling DS260 without any knowledge regarding F1 and Green Card. But I've not submitted yet. Will it affect my obtaining F1?

Thank you in advance!

Yes, it might affect the F1. Hard to say exactly, i do know of cases where an F1 has been granted after DV selection, but you are not supposed to have immigrant intent on an F1.
It would of course make the most sense to adjust status (as you’ve indicated you plan to do) if you do get an F1, as you will be in the US when your number gets current by default (as you are starting university before the fiscal year starts). There is no absolute requirement to file DS260 if you are doing AOS, and certainly no great rush to do it now anyway with a case number in that range even if you were planning on consular processing. So you may want to mull it over a while. The CO will know that you have been selected even without a DS260 submission of course.

If you are refused an F1, could you defer a year, get your green card and start next fall? (Obviously then you would not be subject to the work restrictions of F1 and would qualify for federal funding)

Thank you for your informative comment.

Here is the thing. The college doesn't allow us to defer a year. This is a long-standing school policy. I have to start the school this fall otherwise I withdraw and reapply for the same program which is quite competitive.

I anyway will give it a try applying for F1 maybe?

Don't submit the DS-260.

Go for your F1 student visa.

If you get the F1 student visa, then come to the US, and file to adjust status when you become eligible.

If you don't get the F1, then file the DS-260.

This is the summarized version of my wordy post lol

Ah, yep the competitive programs do tend to do it that way, but the good news is that if you are good enough this year you are probably good enough next year too.  Yes, definitely try for the F1 but if you are refused and do have to do it this way - make sure in your reapplication they know it was due to visa issues. Your next application would be as a domestic student (green card) and usually give you an admissions advantage too. Hopefully it doesn’t come to this outcome though.
