Darwin Award Nominees?  I do hope none of the firefighters responding to this fire were exposed to the HF (hydrogen fluoride or hydrofluoric acid) that would form when they dumped water on the burning batteries.

Two people are dead in Texas after the Tesla they were riding in hopped a curb, crashed into a tree, and burst into flames, local outlets report. Authorities said nobody was driving the car.

The crash occurred on Saturday evening in Spring, Texas, a Houston suburb, when a Tesla traveling at a high speed failed to negotiate a bend and went off the road, local television station KHOU reports. Once the blaze was put out, first responders found the bodies of two men, one in the passenger's seat and one in the back seat of the Tesla, Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman told the outlet.

Judging by the physical evidence and their reconstruction of the incident, investigators concluded that there was nobody in the driver's seat at the time of the crash, Herman said.

Inevitable and to be fair to Tesla not something their system is up to and I have doubts it ever will.

 

I assume you use foam on batteries bit surprised firefighters do not know what to use.

 

Going to attract press attention, there seems a hierarchy with Aviation at the top.

With all the PFAS notoriety, AFFF foam may not be used anymore in many areas.  In my many years as a firefighter, we used AFFF a total of one time in training, and never in service.

They say use a dry chem fire extinguisher, but of course in a vehicle, a fire truck may not have enough of those to really be effective.  I know we only carried two dry chem extinguishers on each truck.  Additionally, the use of that type of extinguisher requires the ability to cover the fire and remove the oxygen which is very difficult to do in a vehicle where the batteries are not easy to get to.  If I was the chief officer on this fire, I would possibly look to getting a front loader to cover the fire in dirt, but more than likely any fire would burn itself out before one got on scene.  Using water is not a good thing as the production of HF is almost assured, but I was not at this scene, so I am not sure how open the area was or what else was burning, but in general, firefighters are taught "put the wet stuff on the red stuff".

Local police said in multiple press interviews that, apparently, nobody was behind the wheel of the 2019 Tesla Model S when it veered off the road, hit a tree and burst into flames, according to their preliminary investigations.

Musk wrote in his tweet on Monday: "Data logs recovered so far show Autopilot was not enabled & this car did not purchase FSD. Moreover, standard Autopilot would require lane lines to turn on, which this street did not have.

So how does a car with no one in the drivers seat suddenly accelerate into a tree?  Heck, if I were Musk, I would rather blame idiots using Autopilot as otherwise, there could be a much more serious flaw of an unintended acceleration that could cost Tesla even more money.

Reports were that the batteries kept reigniting, which complicated the firefighting.
