So I applied for passport book last month. I didn't select "passport card" as it was only useful for ground travel to neighboring countries after reading the state gov website.

It didn't cross my mind that I could use that document as a proof of legal presence and it fits in my wallet (better than passport book or NC). Kicking myself over it now.

Is it possible to call and amend application to include passport card and pay the fee (somehow)? My application is still pending/being processed.

If not possible can I apply again but only for passport card after I receive my passport?

If neither then I'll just have to wait for the current passport to expire and when I renew my passport I select both?

Wondering if anyone was able to obtain both after only applying for one. I searched online but found nothing useful.

Thanks!

Call them up.  I changed from normal processing to an expedite so I see no reason why you can't add a passport card by phone.  They take credit cards so it should be relatively easy.

After some looking around I found that I can apply for passport card on it's own using passport renewal form DS-82 which requires me to send in my new passport. 🤔

What I am curious about is if a passport card ordered separately from a passport book will have a distinct expiration date.  It would be nice to be able have a valid passport card in my possession why renewing a passport.  My card and passport expire on the same day.  Please share your experience once you get both documents.

Yes I got the passport card in part because it is convenient proof of lawful presence and also because I don’t have REAL ID from the dmv and will probably never have it.  A passport card let’s me through the TSA check point.

Thanks. I'll try my luck tomorrow by calling them.

Just curious, can I ask why you "will probably never have" a REAL ID? What's preventing you from getting one?

I was told they used to entertain such request before covid but not anymore when I called.  They also suggest I can make a request via regular mail to the passport center with fee payment and see if they honor it. Quite a hail mary but I'll indulge and see what happens.

The hassle of going to the dmv and catching COVID for an unessential  reason. I can just renew online indefinitely. And just did now.

I’ve a passport card and global entry card that lets me fly.

REAL ID is stupid.  It will never be enforced.  Every time the government sets a deadline it pushes it.  In 2021 it will blame COVID and push the date again.

Update

it's been a week since I submitted a manual request via mail. When I check the status online now it says "we've received your request for passport book and card" instead of passport book only previously.

Looks like it worked but not counting my chickens before they're hatched. Wait to get both and NC in hand.

Thanks @gregcrs2

Great to know that this did work. I'm planning to get both of them as well. However, a citizen is not required to proof legal presence. That is one of the many great things about being a citizen. Most of my (US born) friends don't even have a passport.
