My husband will be able to apply for citizenship soon. Both he and my 14 year old step son have Permanent Resident Cards. Once my husband becomes a citizen, it is my understanding that my stepson will automatically as well. I am just wondering what proof he will get so we can apply for a passport. Are there any forms we will have to fill out for him and will there be any cost for this as well. I have tried to google and read up on it myself but I feel like I get conflicting information and I would love if someone who has already gone through this process could enlighten us.

Thank you in advance!

Assuming your husband has legal and physical custody of his son then he will become a USC when your husband naturalizes. You can then apply for a US passport for him.

Timeline in brief:

Married: September 27, 2014

I-130 filed: February 5, 2016

NOA1: February 8, 2016 Nebraska

NOA2: July 21, 2016

Interview: December 6, 2016 London

POE: December 19, 2016 Las Vegas

N-400 filed: September 30, 2019

Interview: March 22, 2021 Seattle

Oath: March 22, 2021 COVID-style same-day oath

Now a US citizen!

Yes, you will find all the necessary information (proof) listed on the passport application itself. https://eforms.state.gov/Forms/ds11.pdf , see page 2. Essentially, your husband’s naturalization certificate, your stepson’s birth certificate and green card, and proof that your husband has custody of his son are what he will need.

You can also apply for a n600 certificate of citizenship for him- same evidence as above, quite a bit more $$$. Many people just get the passport as it is proof of citizenship, others prefer to have both. I think this may be one where the cost is going down rather than up after Oct 2 but not sure.

If your child has not obtained a certificate of citizenship, you will need to present the following when applying for your child's U.S. passport:

  • Proof of the child’s relationship to the U.S. citizen parent. For the biological child of a U.S. citizen, this generally will be a certified copy of the foreign birth certificate (and a translation if the birth certificate is not in English). For an adopted child, you must submit a certified copy of the final adoption decree (and a translation if the decree is not in English);
  • Proof the child is admitted as a lawful permanent resident, such as the child’s foreign passport with a I-551 stamp, or the child's permanent resident card (green card);
  • Proof of identity and citizenship of the U.S. citizen parent(s);
  • Evidence the child is residing in the United States in the legal and physical custody of the U.S. citizen parent;
  • Completed Form DS-11 and supporting documents.

Yup, going to be cheaper after fee change and online filing is going to be cheaper than paper filing by $10.

By the way passport takes a few weeks/couple of months (not sure latest Covid timelines), n600 much longer. You have to submit the original documents with the passport application but if applying n600 online, you only need to upload copies /scans.  I made an appointment at the passport office (USPS)  for the afternoon of my naturalization ceremony. Came home, scanned copies of everything, did my & kid’s passport application together that afternoon and filed kid’s n600 online a couple days later using the scans.

Thank you all for your response and sorry for our late response, I am the husband, and I have already sent in my application for Naturalization (N-400). Our son is living with us, and he is a Green Card holder as well, and we understand that he will be automatically Naturalized when I am.  However, we need to get him a US passport, and I know we need some proof for his Citizenship in order to get his US passport. I know that I can apply for N-600 (Application for Certificate of Citizenship), but this is very overpriced, so we were hoping that we did not have to apply for this and instead use a different proof of his citizenship to get his passport.  I think you guys covered it, so thank you very much!

Have you received your passports already ? If yes how long did it take ?  How much does N-600 cost
