Applying for Canadian Passport from the USA

Hey VJers,

I am currently going through the Removal of Conditions process from a K1 visa, I sent my application last July and have the 18 month extension letter.

My Canadian passport expires in July and I had plans to go there this week to file for a new passport in my married name and visit with my family but my travel plans were cancelled due to Covid-19.

Does any Canadian who is currently living as an immigrant in the USA know how I can go about renewing my passport from abroad? I know I can mail in the application but I am unsure of where to get the photo taken because they have different standards than the USA and I don’t have a guarantor here.

Any advice on how to proceed would be very much appreciated!

Thank you!

You can get a photo taken from a photo shop or professional photographer. You can even do it yourself as long as it meets the requirements. I had my son's Canadian passport photo taken at a photo shop (I brought in the paper that had the specifications but they said they do it all the time and knew what to do). I mailed a friend the guarantor paperwork, they filled it out and mailed it back to me.

Keep in mind that if you are changing your name, it won't be a renewal. It will be a new application.

travel.gc.ca has a list of photographers in your area, updated by your local consulate.  You can also call the consular services at: 1-844-880-6519, or email them at: ccs.scc@international.gc.ca

Make sure to print/read the forms before calling, so you can ask other questions if needed on who can be your guarantor, etc.

It was pretty easy to renew but as yours is a new application it's a bit different.  You can do the "in lieu of guarantor" since finding a Canadian passport holder who knows you in the USA is difficult.

I agree that you should use someone off the travel.gc.ca list.  I did and my pictures were accepted.  The company actually guaranteed they'd be acceptable or else they'd retake them for free.  Since it cost me about $45 (or more I don't remember exactly as I got a 10 year card) I was happy about that aspect.

Are you able to attach a link for the travel.gc.ca list? I’ve looked for it and can’t find a list on their website...
