This month, a boy of Asian descent was bullied about coronavirus at a San Fernando Valley school and beaten to the degree that he needed an MRI, said Robin Toma, the executive director of the county's Human Relations Commission which works on hate crime prevention.

"We know that during the assault he said, 'I'm not Chinese,'" Toma said.

A detective with the Los Angeles Police Department was assigned several days ago to investigate the school assault as a possible hate crime, said Deputy Chief Kris Pitcher.

Yesterday I overheard a couple of people who looked like they should have known better talking about how there's no way they would go to Chinatown at the moment because of the coronavirus. One of them said she'd stopped ordering Chinese food! Ridiculous.

I did see a comment that the same deal was happening in London, well not ordering Chinese food, that was one of my Welcome to America moments, went to a P F Chang and no Chinese to be seen.

I can totally see a PF Chang as a Chinese-free location. Some of the best, and supposedly very authentic Chinese food I've ever had has been here in the LA area, in the San Gabriel Valley (lol, I wrote SGV and then realized like only me and cyberfx would know what that means). Now I want to plan a trip there for some dim sum. Coronavirus or no!

Does that make you a Valley Girl?

Because I was born there, but lucky enough to have smart parents who moved from there before it got so horrible.

Yes, but that still doesn't say that the particular people in the story were liberal or conservative. Or the people I overheard speaking were liberal or conservative (particularly because I think they were tourists). I've been surprised sometimes at people's political leanings. My Persian-American friend for example is relatively progressive for his community, but I am informed they are quite pro-Trump on balance -- my friend says it's because Iranians like a strong man??

People can't help stereotyping. Even when they know better. We saw it in the article, and we see it in that response.

Yes. I'm just as guilty of it as pretty much everyone, even though I really try to keep an open mind. It happens because we're human. The question becomes whether we go on to challenge those stereotypes or decide to just stick with them.

I will note though that we chose posole and albondigas for lunch over General Tso's, but I swear it was what we wanted, not out of coronavirus fears. :P

Alex told me there is some guy in his office, a bit of a conspiracy theorist, and his new drum he's beating is that the Chinese government spread the coronavirus to get anti-government activists off the streets. And I asked, were there protests in Wuhan? I mean, it almost sounds plausible, and now I'm terrified I'm going to wake up some morning and think: wow, that QAnon stuff makes sense.

Why? There are more Mainland Chinese in Alhambra, MP, Rosemead, San Gabriel, than there is in Chinatown now.

I KNOW!  These were tourists though (I think) so I give them a break. And like, who even goes to Chinatown? There are some decent little venues there for gigs but much, much better food is in the SGV in my opinion.
