https://www.businessinsider.com/authoritarianism-experts-say-time-running-out-americans-to-stop-trump-2020-2

  • Americans are running out of time to stop President Donald Trump's authoritarian slide, experts warned.
  • "There need to be mass protests," a Yale philosophy professor and expert on fascism told Insider. "The Republican Party is betraying democracy, and these are historical times. Someone has got to push back."
  • Since he was acquitted in the GOP-controlled Senate earlier this month, the president has overseen a White House purge of impeachment witnesses, and the attorney general has intervened in the trial of a Trump associate.
  • Republicans have mostly sat back, with at least one senator conceding that Trump's behavior did not seem to have changed because of impeachment.
  • "There is absolutely no reason for him to stop pushing. It goes against both his personality and his experience," Cas Mudde, a political scientist at the University of Georgia, told Insider.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

If Americans are concerned that President Donald Trump and Republicans are moving the US toward becoming a one-party, authoritarian state, they are running out of time to stop them, experts warned.

Trump has exhibited autocratic impulses since his 2016 campaign and from the moment he entered the White House.

The president has attacked virtually every democratic institution in the US when he's felt its actions were unfavorable to his agenda or public appearance. Meanwhile, he pushed traditional US allies away while openly embracing many of the world's most repressive leaders.

So based on this professor (supposedly an expert on fascism), the President should surround himself with folks that are committed to undermining his conducting of foreign policy, or those that will leak every little thing to a leftist media?  Sure, it looks bad that Vindman was let go from the White House, but he obviously was more concerned with his own political biases, and his own self-importance as to who sets foreign policy than actually serving to assist the President.

I think the rhetoric of the professor is over the top, and I think American institutions and people are much Stronger than one presidency.

That said, he does have points to make about Trump flaunting his resilience after avoiding impacts from Mueller and the impeachment.

I think what will bring down Trump in 2020 will be :

1. No progress on healthcare

2. His tweets and rhetorical style

3. Images of refugee children in cages

4. A growing deficit

Any burp in the economy or stock market/oil prices might sink him as well.

All of these depends upon the Democrats putting up a strong candidate and running a stellar campaign, which is not happening yet.

So why do they not make similar points about Nancy Pelosi?  That is one thing that is so great about our Constitution, power in Washington cannot get too strong in any specific governmental entity.

Neither the Speaker not the Senate leader have executive powers.

The Speaker has autocratic powers over the House, and they were definitely exercised recently.  My point is all this "Trump is a dictator" talk is over the top TDS.  He hasn't done anything that Obama hasn't done.

i agree with this. I think a lot of people are guilty. And its not just the republicans with abuse of power. Democrats have also done this during their time and power, and time and time again voted for bill after bill (especially related to war), that they later use against republicans to call them war mongers. Pelosi is as corrupt as can be, she just the other day said bloomberg would be a positive influence to the democratic party.

Personally, I think both parties need a big overhaul. Dont get me wrong, to me, trump has stepped over the line here a couple of times, but I at the same time, understand the little desire of republicans to want to do anything about it, because its not like the democrats are innocent either. Is that the right mindset to have? probably not

Trump does step in it quite a bit with his use of Twitter.  I am not a big fan of social media, but I understand why he uses it since he certainly cannot depend on the media getting his message out without editorializing.  I just wish he would use a bit of a filter sometimes.

Find an was leaving at the end of February any way, he announced that a while back.  He was just asked to leave a bit earlier than he expected.  And rightly so.  I don’t really expect him to undergo UCMJ action, but it would make me happy to see it in the near future.

Here’s what I find amusing.  Even BEFORE Trump was elected, and nearly every week since, we have been told how bad he will be for America by liberals.   How he will ruin our economy.  How is is a terrible business man.

But when I look at all the people who are running against him, those who have been in the business of running our government (some for 10-30 years) at various levels, and under whose purview American government has become the hot mess it is... it makes me wonder how they can claim to have any sort of “solution” for making things better if elected.  I mean, why didn’t they fix the broke stuff years ago?  Why wait for the chance to be president to make yet another promise of false hope?

President Trump certainly was not going to get rid of him until after the impeachment circus was over as I can imagine the phony outrage we would have heard.  I expect though that his duties were greatly diminished after his testimony.  Particularly with his self-important attitude.

The speaker is elected every two years by the elected representatives of the people who voted for her. That is not autocracy. Additionally she can be censured.

The President is elected every four years by the electoral college or the House, and they can be censured or impeached, so I am still finding it hard to fathom why all these talking points of an autocratic leader are relevant.
