It's a constant gaslighting. When using scare tactics it elicits a physiological fear response, causes a constant stream of alertness, high brain activity, adrenaline. This can't be kept up on its own, it needs to constantly be fed, lest people stop paying attention, this is why fake news constantly comes now.. it can't stop. This is why I call it an "injection" of confirmation bias, because physiologically it acts like a drug. The media's conditioning contributes significantly, but the left are willing participants. More often than not, those smart enough to know they're being fed garbage, simply don't care. They want garbage. It's a weird and comical relationship, but the idea isn't so much for convincing themselves, as it is for affecting the behaviors of others. People on the right get caught up in these silly "gotcha" games (by pundits on the right, right wing media, etc.) where they "expose" fake news or lefties posting fake news, parade this around like that's the end. Except, action often gets taken on the media's barrage of fake news, whether it was the spying on Trump, censoring anyone disagreeing with the left, and so on, to which, the aforementioned pundits/media on the right do this "gotcha" again, while elsewhere pandering to the left's antics. Alas, people on the right are engaging in it too. Antifa doesn't happen if governments are enforcing laws, media isn't promoting them, etc. It's the same story of why white supremacy was relegated to societal fringes and going extinct. Thanks to the rise of Antifa, the promotion of destabilization and polarization (by the media, politicians, et al), these people are put back in the spotlight. Now white supremacists have another enemy to fight, more ways to recruit people more vulnerable to radicalization. Winds up being a self-fulfilling prophecy, and in the end, the populace suffers from all this, we see the effects of this destabilization elsewhere in the world. But that's the goal. Wrecking ball. The people in the upper echelons of government are more than happy for this pointless, US destroying destabilization to happen, because it takes attention away from them, their uselessness, their misdeeds. These upper echelon people also mad because social changes, Trump's election, caused the corrupt relationships they rely on to maintain their power/status to diminish, so they're perfectly fine with this short term maneuver. Either they make off like bandits with institutional protection (or slither away in the case of, say, a Civil War), or people get so fed up of the conflict, they come crawling back to the establishment that these people wanted in the first place.
