I was reading about the new rules which require family immigrant applicants to show proof of health insurance at the visa interview.

I applied for my parents using consular processing

- Does anyone have direct experience of the questions and documents they require these days?

- How would one show proof of health insurance before even coming to the US?

I read the rules but it is unclear to me how the consulates are applying the rules

Thanks

The rule was blocked temporarily by a US Federal Judge: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/immigrate/Presidential-Proclamation-on-Health-Care.html

It's business as usual. No changes. Same questions and documents they would require since forever.

See #1. https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/immigrate/Presidential-Proclamation-on-Health-Care.html

You would not have required to show proof of health insurance. That would be (nearly) impossible. You would have been required to show the ability to pay for healthcare and/or health insurance. How would someone show such thing? Please write to our commander-in-chief at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20500. Good luck!

I thought the ruling by the Federal Court applied only to applications inside the US - NOT for overseas consular processing.

Thanks

There is nothing standard that I have seen, and parents covers a very wide spread of potential situations.

They should be prepared to answer the question, not as if somebody coming to the US will not have considered it. Now what the answer could be well that varies a lot from I have good work prospects and have a few job leads which will come with Insurance to I know it costs a lot but I have excellent savings, investments, pension that will easily cover the cost - whatever that cost is.

It was applied to the Presidential Proclamation. That Proclamation is not in effect as of now.

Thanks

Can I attend the interview at the consulate with my parents or do they only allow the applicants to go to the interview?

You have to check directly with the Consulate/Embassy as it varies with the Embassy. Some allow, some don’t, some let you be with the beneficiary, some let you in but you have to be in a separate room, some just kick you out.

Even if not required to have a plan, it is in your best interest to have one anyway, since they will not be eligible for medicare or social security.

check the costs of plans in your area and be able to show you can afford health care (not just for the government but for yourself)

and this may not be an order as such but being able to afford the costs of new immigrants has always been part of the "totality of circumstances "  that the embassy can consider

Since this block was temporary (28 days), will it automatically go into effect once the 28 days are up? Which would be on Dec 1st....

No, there is another hearing scheduled for next week, I think. The Judge will hear arguments from both side and will decide whether or not to extend that injunction until trial date can be set. The government will argue that it is vital to national security that the Proclamation be instituted immediately and how the President has absolute power to admit or not admit any aliens. The Plaintiffs will argue that “national security, kiss my behind”, SCOTUS has already ruled that the government cannot force anyone to buy anything including health insurance and this is just another attempt from a racist President to curtail LEGAL immigration. And then the Judge will decide. Good stuff.

Agree with this.  Similar to showing financial support that they will not lean on public assistance, this isn't much different.

My parents were approved last week and the best we have are quotes and our banking statements.  But that's really the closets we can get to 'proof'.  Although it may not be a requirement, these quotes are real and health insurance shouldn't definitely be something to consider when moving family over.
