Hi guys!

I have my flight tomorrow from London to Vancouver B.C and then from there to Portland, Oregon. I tried to check in online for the first half of the flight (London to Canada) and it told me there was an error and they can’t check me in because I require a Canadian electronic travel authorisation or visa. Is this true? I am not staying in Canada I am just there for my connecting flight. Is this a mistake or do I really need an electronic travel authorisation??

Thanks for your help!

If you Google ETA for transit Visa, one of the search results is from Canadian Immigration (cic.ca).

Even for a connecting flight? Not even entering the country from outside the airport. I am literally there for 6 hours in the airport connecting flights area till I can catch my plane to USA on a K1 visa

Have you looked the info on transit visa needs in Canada?

Why not do it? Is it no longer free? The process took my wife less than 5 minutes when we visited Canada a couple years ago...

It’s not a direct flight if that’s what you mean. It’s a connecting flight. Just one ticket

A few years ago my husband was not allowed to board our flight from ORD to Athens with a stop in Toronto because he did not have a visa to enter Canada.  Depending on your nationality they do actually require visas just for layovers in Canada.

@VanillaCatspersonally I would call customer service of airline carrier you have ticket booked with and query them as to why it indicates you need an electronic CA transit travel visa. This is the website for applying for the visa if you have to = https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/visit-canada/eta/apply.html.  Best of luck and safe travels!  It could be an issue with the Air Transat website...
