Do you need a certified copy of the fiancee's birth certificate to file for AOS?

Honestly I’d notarize anything and everything and wouldn’t translate it myself.

I translated my husband's certificate of no criminal history, certificate of civil status, and birth certificate myself; I simply signed a statement to the effect that I am fluent in Spanish and that the translations were true and correct. We used these for the K1 and AOS afterward, both successfully.

 

ETA: I didn't get either of them notarized, either.

What words did you use in the translation statement?


Anyway the notion of a “original translation” makes no sense given there are many outfits online that will translate documents with accompanying certificates of translation that satisfy USCIS. You get a PDF, print it, and submit it.  
 

In our case I uploaded a PDF to my wife’s lawyer’s box dot com account.  The lawyer printed the PDF and sent it in.  
 

Notarized and notarial translations are an embassy thing.

Photocopy. Or Scanned and printed copy.  Same difference.  
 

Origjnals should stay in your possession. 
 

You will bring originals to the AOS interview and will not surrender them unless the IO demands.  If it is a translation just let it go. For $20 you can get a new translation done.  If it is an original birth certificate then think very hard before you comply.  Personally, given the effort it takes to get birth certificates from foreign countries my response would be “sorry I need to consult with my attorney”.
