Because a notarised affidavit carries the inherent potential punishment of perjury if someone intentionally makes a false statement.

USCIS will often ask for a notarised affidavit attesting to claimed facts if primary documents regarding those facts aren't available.

It shows the person who wrote the statement is the person who wrote the statement?

In Canada a notarized statement has to be correct info as well, not that the USCIS knows that.

It doesn't really...  but OK.  I'm not sure where any of that is required

YMMV

Required? No. Not all suggestions are requirements though.  But then not everything asked for from the USCIS makes sense either.

When I was a notary I never had to verify the statement, only the signature.  That is why notarized statements don't carry much weight.  The notary doesn't care what is said, they only care about who is signing the paper.  I never cared at all what the papers were for.

US notaries are different and it varies by province in Canada.  But Alberta is pretty particular.

Thanks all for your help. The petitioner (my husband) sent a letter (notarized at the bank) explaining that I haven't been married, and detailing the error we made on the i-130 form (by part and number). Additionally, he sent another copy of the i-130 form corrected.

They mailed the request May 1st and received our response May 9th. They approved our petition on May 16th. It was a very quick process for us (at Potomac Center). We applied February 14th and got the 797 form on May 16th.
