Hi everyone,

My K1 visa was recently granted.

I travel to the USA in a little over a week.

Does anybody have any information on the best practices for healthcare insurance?

I will be residing in MA thus once married shall be able to sign onto Mas health.

What do people do in the meantime?

Thanks in advance!

Google "k-1 visa health insurance"

Companies have policies for this.

That is interesting question! I am  going under my husband''s insurance after we get married but what people do in the mean time? We are planning to get married as soon as possible but you never know what can happen in a week! Can I have some kind of travelling insurance that I would get in my home country?

hi Joe,

our plan is the following:

once my fiancee gets the visa, she and her children will come. She will purchase a 2 month travel insurance which will be valid during her stay.

This will give us enough time to get married, receive the marriage certificate which I will need to present at my company to verify that they are my dependents. Once my company verified it and approved them as dependents, I can add them to my health insurance and they will be covered from the 1st of the following month.

Example:

date of entry: May 5th

civil wedding ceremony: May 10th

receive marriage certificate:  May 31st

Provide marriage cert to my company: June 1st

Company to approve them as dependents, therefore being eligible for insurance: June 8th

Insurance effective for newly added dependents: July 1st

As you can see, there will be easily 6-8 weeks which will need to be covered after arrival.

@Zoltan KBe careful with using travel insurance, make sure to check it will cover you if you are not planning to return to your country to reside.  A lot of them will have clauses which will void the policy if this is the case, which is why expat insurance exists.

The simplest option would be pay out of pocket or get married asap so you can add your spouse to your won insurance if allowed.

The problem with travel insurance is that it does not cover a lot of things. It is a good plan but be aware that you are still limited on what cost will be covered.
