Kmart and Sears use to own the market, then Sam Walton was to logistics what Henry Ford was to the automobile industry. Kmart would be out of stock more than a Philippines restaurant. 

 

For those that have never been in a Sams/Walmart DC it is a thing of awe. I use to could name most Sams DC's from memory.

We have three Kmarts in the FL Keys.  Key Largo, Marathon, and Key West.  Also have a Sears in Key West just a block or so from the Kmart.

 

Then again life in the FL Keys is years behind the rest of the country.

 

No Walmart down here unfortunately.

I was in Cancun a few years ago, they have a Sams there.  You walk in and it set up just like any other Sams, kinda impressive

WalMart ran KMart out of Texas many years ago.  Kmart even tried to compete with Sams with a Pace Store, of course it didn't make it.

  The Sears close to me looks like it has closed already whenever I drive by. It's right off the interstate and all you ever see in the parking lot are semi's stopping to rest. Doesn't look like there are any customers. I haven't actually went there for about a year. All I can say for sure is the lights are still on.

 

  Man though, think of all the household names they use to have. Kenmore, Craftsman, Diehard. I'm sure there were more. Somebody screwed up big time.

In late November, I caught the out-of-business sale at the Sears in the big mall in Harlingen.

That Sears was a destination for me whenever I visited the Valley.  Now, no reason to visit the mall.

It wasn't on the store-closing lists, either, as wasn't the KMart in Harlingen.

 

Buddy said that the Sears in the Victoria, TX mall also closed down at around the same time.

He, too, said that he now has no reason to visit the mall.

The closings of all the Sears Hardware stores a couple of years ago was also a hit.

From the one near me, I would've bought many appliances there for 2 kitchen remodels.

Instead, had to deal with Lowe's (yuck) and Home Despot (bigger yuck).

 

A Double Dave's Pizza franchisee near me closed his restaurant consequent to the Sears Hardware's closing.

He was almost all the way across a large strip-center from the S.H.

He said that after the S.H. closed, he wasn't doing the business that he'd been doing before.

There's a trickle-down effect beyond just the closing of a Sears store.

Just stepped foot into a local K-Mart tonight.  First time in many years.  Was impressed that it was as well-stocked as a WalMart.  Last time I visited one, it was barely stocked.  I might have to change my shopping habits a bit.  K-Mart is much closer than WalMart here.

   Yeah the first mostly, I think. Even the online shopping part, Sears and Walmart were both bad when they initiated that aspect of there business. The problem is Walmart got better, and Sears online shopping still is horrible. As big as Walmart is, and as much flak as they get sometimes, I think they actually do a pretty good job at identifying where they need to get better. Sears didn't do that. To be fair neither did Radio Shack, Blockbuster, Toys r Us, Circuit City. A lot of stores my wife used to like that I can't even name. Sears/KMart was huge though. For them to end up where they now, it's not just one mistake.

If Sears had proper management, they would have gotten in on the ground floor of internet sales mimicking their monopoly of the mail-order business from way back when.  Obviously, they missed the boat and although I don't want to see any business fail, when they do, let them.
