We filed N400 application - state of NJ

and we got a message today that estimated completion time is September 2019

I thought it takes only 3-4 months..why it says 10 months completion time?

Also, message showed we are doing back ground check ..what does that mean?

^^^ That's the key word. It is only an estimation of the completion time and could be before then. They are anticipating a heavy workload for Naturalization filers.

Depends on your country of origin, (Muslim or  non-Muslim country), Your background check, how common your name is , and how busy you USCIS office is.

There are hundreds factors. No one in the world can tell you when USCIS will complete your application.

Times have changed, even for Newark, which is a fast office, relatively speaking.

I did my N400 in the summer of 2014 and I had my passport in 4.5 months from the day I mailed in my application at the post office. Same day oath definitely helped.

I would expect around 10 months now.

Wow, that is WAY faster than posted processing times of 12-21 months for San

Diego! Awesome. Do you happen to know what estimated time it gave originally on her online uscis account?
