If you check the "No" box, it just means you will have to physically go to the SS office to apply for a card........on the other hand, checking "Yes" will usually result in the SS card arriving very soon after entering the US .

My wife entered the US on June 23, 2017.  Her SS card arrived on July 3, 2017.

@Abies we clicked the yes for that box and still had to go into the SSA office to apply for a social security card..The first time we gone, the agent told us we had to wait until 21 days for him to be here in America, so we waited it out 24 days, went back, processed his paperwork and he will receive his card this week..Now it maybe different in every State because I have read where some hadn't received their card and had to go in person..He actually got his green card before his ss card..

That might not save time, I'd suggest you tick yes and still go to the SS office once you arrive. No penalty for doing either.

I don’t know what state you live in but an ssn should not prevent you from getting a d/l or start school

YMMV

Most states will require an SSN, legal presence dov, and proof of residency.  Checking no will not get you an SSN any faster.  It takes time for you to be in the system.
