Hello all,

im filing my k1 petition next week and im afraid I may have made a huge mistake. !

i highlighted dates on some of my evidence ... conversations etc.. not on the actual application ...

im freaking out because I just read on the USCIS website that you can’t highlight but I’m not sure if they meant on the application or on evidence ...

I feel totally screwed because I spent so much time gathering the evidence and now may have to reprint ..

how did I miss this !!😞😞😞😞

I just looked at the USCIS website, and it states that you cannot highlight because the scanners will not read the information properly. So this means you cannot highlight the application itself, because that is what they scan ! Evidence isn't scanned, so even though you highlighted it , I think you will be fine !

You didn’t screw anything, in fact highlighting is good in evidences, so that their eyes goes on those highlighted imported ones.

You will be fine, as long as you didn't use the highlighter on the form.
When I submitted my application I used a yellow highlighter to put some details in evidence. For example I included a scanned copy of our Universal Studios tickets from our Orlando trip and highlighted our names on them, to point out that the tickets actually belonged to us. I did the same with flight receipts, so they would immediately recognized it was real proof. :)
Good luck with everything!

The USCIS states on their form filing tips the following regarding the use of highlighting:

"Do not use highlighters or correction fluid or tape. The scanners we use will not properly read information that is greyed out, highlighted or corrected using correction fluid or tape."

https://www.uscis.gov/forms-filing-tips

Although these instructions are specific to filling out USCIS forms, it is probably fair to assume if your evidence with highlights is also scanned into their systems electronically, any highlighted text would also not be readable.

Yes, unfortunately we can only speculate on what they actually scan, but it is probably better to be safe than sorry. If you have not submitted your petition yet, you can be thankful that you have the opportunity to correct this.   On documents that are difficult to regenerate without highlights (such at photographs), perhaps you can re-write the same text on them without the highlights.

I’ve submitted already but I only highlighted dates on conversations and receipts to indicate  dates

Ok.   It is probably going to be just fine.  Sorry if I gave you any worries.  I have photocopied highlighted text before, and while it can be difficult to read, my experience is that it is still readable.

My best guess is that they scan the forms using OCR (optical character recognition) to electronically manage vital information about the case.   It is very possible that the supplemental evidence and supporting documentation do not even get scanned, so highlighting these pages would not be a problem.  In the worst case, the USCIS may ask for a resubmit of these documents via RFE prior to NOA2.   Not really a big deal.   Best wishes to a speedy NOA2!  :)
