But you need to wait 2 weeks at least for the I-94 to be in the system. So my question was would it make sense to get married during these 2 weeks while we are waiting, and then apply for the SSN before we file for AOS.

As others have said, no need to wait for two weeks. My i-94 was available the same day i entered the US, and then i went to apply for my SSN on day 4.

That's what my wife did. The marriage license application requested the SSN if she had one. At the SSA you only "apply" for one, but none is issued yet. We walked straight from the SSA to the courthouse.

No state requires SSN for marriage (if you don't have one already). Undocumented immigrants (or whatever term people prefer now) can marry fine.

Nope. At least not here...we walked out with a paper that said we applied for it and it should arrive in the mail within a couple weeks.

There is an exception to this for certain religious groups and such that are except from SS altogether (no taxes & no disbursements), in which they technically get an SSN as required to do so, but never have a card produced and just enter the number on a form that excludes them from having to participate in SS.

Thank you for the information.

We plan to get married in the first 48-72 hours he is here if possible.  We changed the plans so that his POE is near my parents and we will go to Rhode Island where you can get married the same day.  The whole point of all this journey is that we want to be married and start our lives together.  We tried to get married in his country and file for CR-1 and the sheikh didn't allow us to get married.  We were ready to marry in May and had to wait and go the K1 route instead.  I do not want to wait an extra second.  I'm so glad that I (the US Citizen) am the one changing my name so that the SSN thing is a non-issue!  I can't wait to finally be able to change MY name, God willing!
