but yeah, finding job, if you are picky can be very hard. I got a lot of emails and calls from recruiters, mainly people with some sort of indian accent (i am in the IT world so this is expected), and majority of them were recruiting for contracting jobs - 3-6 months type of thing, which is not suitable if i have to move around every 6 months. Monster.com is full of these recruiters. LinkedIn is the best source of good opportunities for me i believe.

Just a FYI: a lot of tech companies do that, BUT they keep renewing an employee's contract over and over. That's the case where my wife is working now. There are actually more contract employees than permanent ones apparently. She also works for an established, profitable company, not a start-up.

I realize that's not ideal for someone who is immigrating to the US and has to support a family, but unfortunately that's the situation here.

The one bit of good news I have is the job market is strong right now, and it doesn't seem that difficult to find employment if you have the right skill set.

The issue with contract jobs is that you do not have any benefits - and the one that i would want to have is the healthcare, especially since i have my family to cover as well. So contracting is not an attractive opportunity in from my point of view.

My wife started applying for jobs as soon as she received her EAD. It took her about a month to find a job. She applied to dozens (a mix of retail and entry level office jobs), and contacted several temp agencies. Her worst day job searching was getting rejected by Target for a cashier position. Eventually got a temp job through one of the temp agencies. It was actually working on a US Navy base documenting old blueprints of naval ships (IOW data entry). How she was able to do that work as a non-citizen is beyond me.

Anyway, her first assignment offered her a permanent position after a few weeks, but yours truly had to make her life difficult, and took a job across the country, so she had to job search again. Took her a month again to find another temp job. She had a few temp jobs before finding a full time job through good ol' Craigslist. All were doing some type of office work (data entry, then basic accounting).

In just over 2 years, she's had 8 jobs, kinda crazy. 5 of them were temporary assignments though. 6 were through employment agencies, 2 were applying directly. Last month she finally found a job she's happy with.

Tl;dr version: applying to hundreds of jobs and using employment agencies worked for my wife.

Wow she has gotten a lot of experience job searching and probably finding out what she likes and doesn’t like.

I'm a contractor - they have a full benefits package for me. I have been renewed once since my start in April earlier this year and they are looking to renew me until they get funding for a permanent position. I was also initially approached by a recruiter with Indian accent. He was pre-screening me. I then got a phone interview with his supervisor - which in turn set up an interview with the company for me.

OP - I was offered my job right before I got my EAD card. I had been perfecting and sending resume's for about 2 months at that point. I then got my Green Card only 2 weeks after, but as mentioned the EAD was at least enough for me. My first and current job is as a Sr Analytical Chemist - which is a higher level than the job I left back in Sweden. I do think I was lucky though, even if a lot of hard work went into it.

That is  good if you get all the benefits included in your package. So far, the one that reached me via  email/phone call were paid by the hour and no benefits at all (more than 30 different openings), and majority of them are around 6 months to 1 year.

So i have concluded that i wont find any contracting position in the job market i am in right now with benefits.

I got my job in Delta one month after I started applying for a job. I just got accepted for training to be a Delta flight attendant and I’m super excited! For those of you who likes traveling, I strongly recommend the airlines, for obvious reason.
