I've noticed that this issue is being compared with DADT.. and I will stress again this has nothing to do with DADT in several ways.

1. Transgenderism isn't like homosexuality. There's no scientific basis for trangenderism. There is such for homosexuality. None of the explanations for transgenderism being natural makes any sense whatsoever and is supported by science. It's entirely a social construct by bored people, in an age where people need to feel special by not accomplishing something. And then feel they must be catered to for this. Hence why the left call people like Bruce Jenner a hero. It's a joke.

2. People who are transgender aren't being kicked out of the military for being transgender. Gays were kicked out under DADT for being gay. Again, nothing in common. This is entirely about people wanting cosmetic and hormonal procedures done at the taxpayers/military expense, as if this is something we all have to foot for them. Just no.

Overall, another dumb thing thats getting all this attention because the left want their way.

All these overreactions are merely an expected response from people who are extremely upset Trump won in November, thus find any reason to embellish everything he does as if it's the next coming of the third reich.

Wow, someone needs to do some research...

I think if the individual has already transitioned and had all surgeries there is no reason why they should not be allowed sign up, If an individual has not transitioned why should the military pick up the medical bill, also how long would the person be unavailable for duty after each surgery? There are also issues and side effects using hormones, increased aggression is a possible side effect for a female who is going through the change.

Johns Hopkins Psychiatrist: Transgender is ‘Mental Disorder;' Sex Change ‘Biologically Impossible’

http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/michael-w-chapman/johns-hopkins-psychiatrist-transgender-mental-disorder-sex-change

(CNSNews.com) --  Dr. Paul R. McHugh, the former psychiatrist-in-chief for Johns Hopkins Hospital and its current Distinguished Service Professor of Psychiatry, said that transgenderism is a “mental disorder” that merits treatment, that sex change is “biologically impossible,” and that people who promote sexual reassignment surgery are collaborating with and promoting a mental disorder.

Dr. McHugh, the author of six books and at least 125 peer-reviewed medical articles, made his remarks in a recent commentary in the Wall Street Journal, where he explained that transgender surgery is not the solution for people who suffer a “disorder of ‘assumption’” – the notion that their maleness or femaleness is different than what nature assigned to them biologically.

He also reported on a new study showing that the suicide rate among transgendered people who had reassignment surgery is 20 times higher than the suicide rate among non-transgender people. Dr. McHugh further noted studies from Vanderbilt University and London’s Portman Clinic of children who had expressed transgender feelings but for whom, over time, 70%-80% “spontaneously lost those feelings.”

While the Obama administration, Hollywood, and major media such as Timemagazine promote transgenderism as normal, said Dr. McHugh, these “policy makers and the media are doing no favors either to the public or the transgendered by treating their confusions as a right in need of defending rather than as a mental disorder that deserves understanding, treatment and prevention.”

“This intensely felt sense of being transgendered constitutes a mental disorder in two respects. The first is that the idea of sex misalignment is simply mistaken – it does not correspond with physical reality. The second is that it can lead to grim psychological outcomes.”

The transgendered person’s disorder, said Dr. McHugh, is in the person’s “assumption” that they are different than the physical reality of their body, their maleness or femaleness, as assigned by nature. It is a disorder similar to a “dangerously thin” person suffering anorexia who looks in the mirror and thinks they are “overweight,” said McHugh.

This assumption, that one’s gender is only in the mind regardless of anatomical reality, has led some transgendered people to push for social acceptance and affirmation of their own subjective “personal truth,” said Dr. McHugh. As a result, some states – California, New Jersey, and Massachusetts – have passed laws barring psychiatrists, “even with parental permission, from striving to restore natural gender feelings to a transgender minor,” he said.

The pro-transgender advocates do not want to know, said McHugh, that studies show between 70% and 80% of children who express transgender feelings “spontaneously lose those feelings” over time. Also, for those who had sexual reassignment surgery, most said they were “satisfied” with the operation “but their subsequent psycho-social adjustments were no better than those who didn’t have the surgery.”

“And so at Hopkins we stopped doing sex-reassignment surgery, since producing a ‘satisfied’ but still troubled patient seemed an inadequate reason for surgically amputating normal organs,” said Dr. McHugh.

The former Johns Hopkins chief of psychiatry also warned against enabling or encouraging certain subgroups of the transgendered, such as young people “susceptible to suggestion from ‘everything is normal’ sex education,” and the schools’ “diversity counselors” who, like “cult leaders,” may “encourage these young people to distance themselves from their families and offer advice on rebutting arguments against having transgender surgery.”

Dr. McHugh also reported that there are “misguided doctors” who, working with very young children who seem to imitate the opposite sex, will administer “puberty-delaying hormones to render later sex-change surgeries less onerous – even though the drugs stunt the children’s growth and risk causing sterility.”

Such action comes “close to child abuse,” said Dr. McHugh, given that close to 80% of those kids will “abandon their confusion and grow naturally into adult life if untreated ….”

“’Sex change’ is biologically impossible,” said McHugh. “People who undergo sex-reassignment surgery do not change from men to women or vice versa. Rather, they become feminized men or masculinized women. Claiming that this is civil-rights matter and encouraging surgical intervention is in reality to collaborate with and promote a mental disorder.”

The timing of this transgender ban is almost as interesting as the move itself.

Why now? With the Trump administration being buffeted by the Jeff Sessions political death watch, the ongoing multi-prong investigation into the Trump campaign, the healthcare drama in the Senate and the impending Russian sanctions bill, perhaps the administration decided this was a good time to change the subject and rally conservative forces to his side.

Republicans have long used cultural issues as a wedge to divide Democrats and energise evangelicals. As one White House insider acknowledged, this is straight out of that playbook. While Mr Trump campaigned as sympathetic to LGBT rights, he needs the traditional religious conservatives to stay loyal to him now, more than ever.

Or perhaps, as Politico is reporting, the White House sought to resolve an intraparty dispute that threatened passage of a key military spending bill in the House of Representatives. That the president chose to do so suddenly, with little advanced notice, would not be out of the ordinary for this administration.

The president's action will create a furore among liberals and the media commentators whose disdain for the current administration is not a new development. This is a fight the White House will welcome.

The independent Rand Corporation estimated in 2016 that about 4,000 US active-duty and reserve service members are transgender, although some campaigners put the figure higher than 10,000.

Rand also predicted that the inclusion of transgender people in the military would cause a 0.13% increase in healthcare spending (approximately $8.4m).

A Military Times analysis found that the Department of Defense spends five times that figure just on erectile dysfunction drug Viagara alone.

Honestly transgenderism was always a joke.

Human biology.. human DNA that comprises gender chromosomes shows only X and Y.

Transgender advocates suggest gender is a sliding scale or spectrum. There is absolutely nothing in human chromosomes that comprise gender that suggests this whatsoever. The X-Y sex-determinants are just that.. X and Y. Nothing else. There's no "spectrum" of gender chromosomes whatsoever.

The idea of equating this to medical necessities is garbage, there's no medical necessity of changing gender. People just feel like it. And while I'm all for the freedom of people to do with themselves what they please, the idea of forcing other people to cater to it is stupid. The left see this forcing others to cater to their political whims as freedom. It's anything but.

Ben Shapiro is quite excellent at conveying these thoughts as well:

And one thing he elucidates on is that the insane suicide rate of transgenders suggests that transgenderism is a mental illness.

that's not how it works. when you're in the military there's military health care. i don't know much about it, because i'm not in the military. but, since the military is one's employment and health insurance is employment based, you see where i'm going with this. i have no problem with people's viagra being covered, so long as this is an equal precedence. and again, not every transgendered person is getting surgery or hormones. but this is the angle certain parties like to push, because they have a very narrow and bigoted idea of what a transgendered person is.

eta, i didn't see the ####### job bit..as long as it's medically necessary and would be covered under regular health insurance and not considered cosmetic only, go for it. i know there are people here who can't fathom a woman getting a reduction, but it's a real thing.

So many uneducated people on here...  Sex and gender is not the same thing...

"

Sex is assigned at birth, refers to one’s biological status as either male or female, and is associated primarily with physical attributes such as chromosomes, hormone prevalence, and external and internal anatomy. Gender refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for boys and men or girls and women. These influence the ways that people act, interact, and feel about themselves. While aspects of biological sex are similar across different cultures, aspects of gender may differ."

Mental illnesses affect the way people think too.

But yes, social construct.. imaginary.. exactly what I've been saying. Thank you for your concurrence.

I think that any social construct that elevates the risk of suicide to the level that transgenderism does needs to be approached with serious caution, not with the sort of freedom agenda as if this likens to homosexuality.

There are many cases of persons born 'ambiguously' and 'assigned' a sex as a baby and 'forced' to behave as the gender chosen by their parents (or in some cases by the doctor and the parents were never told and couldn't figure out what was wrong with their kid). Many of those kids ended up clearly being forced into the body of the 'wrong' gender. They struggle for years and years, not knowing what gender they are, or if they are to be considered straight or gay. Those who believe transgenderism is a mental disorder really fail to grasp that sexuality is a complex concept that goes beyond biology. There is an incredible amount that science still doesn't understand and it seems those who aren't secure enough in their own sexuality to fight alongside the battlefield with someone that is transgendered perhaps need some therapy sessions and 'safe spaces' to cry a little.
