The German grocery chain Lidl is opening its first stores in the US after years of preparation.

On June 15, the company will open its first nine stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Lidl released a list of the first stores on Tuesday.

The chain will add another 80 stores along the East Coast by the middle of next year.

Lidl (pronounced lee-dil) plans to eventually open as many as 600 stores in the US, according to a copy of a company presentation obtained by Business Insider. Lidl currently has 10,000 stores in 27 European countries.

The company describes itself as a cross between Trader Joe's and Harris Teeter and promises to offer prices that are as much as 50% lower than its competition. Like Trader Joe's, Lidl places a strong emphasis on private-label brands.

Interesting. I've been to many Lidl stores in Germany and many Trader Joe's stores in the US and I have to say that the two are not really that similar. Lidl is more comparable to Aldi if anything. Perhaps the Lidl stores that are planned to open in the US will have a different sales model than the German version, if they are trying to compete with TJs.

I like Lidl though and I'm looking forward to seeing them opening stores in the US.

We have several Aldi's in our area along with TJs, Whole Foods, Krogers, Meijer, and Walmart, along with some smaller Spartan Brand groceries.  All seem to be doing OK, so I am not sure if Lidl will be displacing anybody.  I know my wife likes to go to Aldi occasionally, but usually we go to the most convenient closest store and generally do not drive further for any particular store.

Seriously? Trader joe's prices are some of the most reasonable, at least in this area. You can find organic stuff for the same price as non organic in other grocery stores.

I doubt we will see this store in Vermont anytime soon, hell we didn't even get a Trader Joe's until about 2-3 years ago.

Vacation was great thanks, nice and relaxing. It was 88-92 degrees and sunny every day. Spent lots of time by the pool and on the beach, did a lot of snorkeling as well. I gotta say that having a swim up pool bar is definitely a plus on a hot day. The food was very good too. On a sad note, there was no Gary sighting on the beaches of Grand Cayman, maybe next year.

This was the view from our room.

lol somebody's gotta find him somewhere. Cool, glad you had fun, nice view from the room, looks a little windy though! We had an awesome view from our princess balcony as well, although TBH I think next time I will try a different cruiseline, there were some things I was not very happy with. We actually chose Alaska this year because we wanted to not have a warm weather vacation as our last two were. We ended up with so much fog and rain though that some excursions got cancelled(but I did get to see humpbacks, drive a zodiac on the pacific ocean and walk straight up to a glacier), which means me being me not taking no for an answer we're going back next year(just in July and not on a cruise this time). Originally I thought about doing Roatan and Utila next year for diving but now it looks like it will be Alaska part II, then we'll head to the galapagos to get my fix of scuba diving with hammerheads and other sharks, sea lions, penguins, etc. If you don't already scuba, I highly recommend it. Much much better than snorkeling IMO.

Gary will show up on some exotic beach surrounded by beautiful RUB women at some point!

There was a steady light breeze right a long the coastline that would get gusty on occaision, which is when I probably snapped that pic. The breeze was a welcome plus though as it took the edge off the heat and humidity and kept the bugs at bay. My wife and I both agree that this was one of the best vacation that either of us has had, we plan on going back either next year or in 2019.

Alaska is a good time, but when done as a cruise it can be quite hectic, too many ports in such a short time. We did a bunch of excursions when we went but the best one was a helicopter ride through the mountains and glaciers and then landing on top of one of the glaciers where there was a small make shift camp where sled dogs were trained. We all took turns driving the sleds with a full pack of dogs, that was really cool.
