Marriage License and Marriage Certificate same thing? I-130

Me and my husband got married after living together for a almost year. The thing is in the state we live in (Michigan) the marriage certificate is on the same page as the license, I was also told so by my friend. I just need a second opinion from someone who's actually been in the situation.

Yes, the licence (top 3/4 of the page) becomes a certificate once you've had your marriage ceremony and the bottom is filled in and signed. You also need to file it to get a certified copy to use for official purposes (such as immigration).

If it isn't difficult, it isn't worth it.

Thank you so much! Also by file do you mean turn in the other two copies to the county clerk? Will I be able to file the I-130 with the certificate I have now?

Yes, you need to take the two copies to the county clerk. You can get a certified copy of the filed certificate from them (with a seal), that is what you need to file i130.

If it isn't difficult, it isn't worth it.

Some states do not have marriage certificates; instead, the marriage licence, once the marriage has taken place and the officiant has signed the license indicating this, becomes the marriage certificate after being endorsed and signed by the county clerk or deputy. 

 

Texas is one such state.

We got married at a courthouse and the judge who performed the ceremony turned them in himself, leaving us with a copy with a gold seal. Should I go to the county clerk again to get that certified?

If the clerk or judge stamped your copy with a raised seal then it should be good. Otherwise you should go and obtain certified copies from the county clerk.

The gold seal copy is just a "souvenir". Our officiant suggested we frame it ;-) You need to go to the county clerk and ask for a certified copy of the certificates that were filed. 

If it isn't difficult, it isn't worth it.

It all depends on your state, but in NV, the license is what allows you to get married (lol) and the certificate that they hand you at the same time with the emblem is a souvenir like A'n'L said. About a week after wedding we requested a certified copy of our marriage cerificate from the county clerk (was done online and $14) and we got it in about a week. We then sent a copy of that with our adjustment of status packet. Good Luck!
