Legitimate question.  How hard and expensive would it be to use e verify as a mandatory?

 

i worked in HR back in Canada.  I think a huge problem is that hiring managers allow people to just jot down numbers and don't check that they actually belong to them.  To my knowledge, my husband has never had to show his ssn card for any job.  Our department policy when I was working HR was that we had to physically see the social insurance number on a card (or now government issued paper) and copy it.

 

i personally support E Verify and realize that it doesn't solve every problem.  Specifically the cash job industry like landscaping, nail technicians, entertainers etc.

 

would it work?

If I can't even get the HR in big companies to understand what an EAD is compared to a green card, E-verify might be a stretch for some of them. I don't see why it can't be standard practice for everyone though. But this is all part of a system that needs modernization and ways to eliminate errors. The expensive part I suppose is really in providing training for the HR or hiring managers to understand what they are doing properly.

I've not researched specific examples, but how many times and in what circumstances has E-Verify failed or proved to be inaccurate?  In such instances, what's the recourse?

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

If it comes up with a mismatch the applicant has so many days to go to SS Office and correct it . I have never had a false positive

Before e-verify, all you had to do was fill out an I-9, with two accepted forms of ID. The good ID's in Atlanta where about 1200. Cheap about 400. Of course many times a legal would let them borrow their ID. All done with a wink and a nod, because under federal law you have no liability in confirming the two pieces of ID are valid.

 

I have seen SS card with 7 numbers and people that were 27 that had ids that claimed they were 52.

 

The govt is not going to attack the problem at the easiest point to fix, because . well you know why

I don't even know if my husband's employer participated with E-verify and that is certainly a very large college with a lot of staff. An I-9 was completed of course, and he presented his SSN and green card, background check, and drug screen. It's apparently only voluntary in the state he works in.

It probably wouldn't be that difficult, but the old argument was that we already had enough laws, plus I am not I like the idea, without first doing something to change the status of the millions of people who are already here. People broke the law, but why should only immigrants be punished, for something that many Americans themselves clearly benefited from.

It would be as easy as passing a law mandating it. It is illegal to use E verify to screen persons already employed
