Comey Confirms F.B.I. Inquiry on Russia; Sees No Evidence of Wiretapping

Is anyone surprised? The so-called president lied about being wiretapped by President Obama; the probe into Putin's involvement in the elections continues.

■ The F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, publicly confirmed an investigation into Russian interference in the presidential election and whether associates of the president were in contact with Moscow.

■ Mr. Comey also said the F.B.I. had “no information” to support President Trump’s allegation that Barack Obama wiretapped him.

■ The hearing’s featured witnesses: Mr. Comey and Adm. Michael S. Rogers, the director of the National Security Agency.

Comey confirms the F.B.I. is investigating Russian election interference.

The F.B.I. is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible links between the Trump campaign and the Russian government — and whether there was any coordination, Mr. Comey said.

 

Mr. Comey said that it was unusual for the F.B.I. to confirm or deny the existence of any investigations, but that in unusual circumstances when it is in the public interest, the bureau will sometimes discuss such matters.

“This is one of those circumstances,” he said.

“The F.B.I., as part of our counterintelligence effort, is investigating the Russian government’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 president election,” he continued, adding that the investigation included looking at whether associates of Mr. Trump were in contact with Russian officials, and whether they colluded with them.

The House Intelligence Committee begins public hearings for its investigation into the possibility of collusion between Donald Trump and the Russian government to win the 2016 election today. It is guaranteed to be a McCarthyist dog and pony show, in which high-profile witnesses will be trotted out and many absurd allegations will be made in authoritative-sounding tones by authoritative-sounding voices insisting that this is not the most ridiculous thing that anyone has ever seen. It is also guaranteed to turn up nothing that will lead to Trump's impeachment or arrest. When that happens, progressive rebels need to begin loudly pointing and laughing at what spectacular asses the neocons and establishment Democrats have made of themselves, and we must never stop reminding everyone of how the corporate media lied to them.

And mark my words, no tangible evidence of such collusion will be found. Establishment officials are already trying to caution the public not to get their hopes up about finding anything of the sort, because they have realized that they’ve painted themselves into a corner. All the Russia hysteria has made a useful distraction from the fact that actual real-life election rigging is known to have happened in the DNC in the last election cycle, and increasing tensions with Russia has been useful for the manipulations that the power establishment has been looking to advance with that nation, but it’s also brought all Democrats together under one propaganda-driven narrative, and the spell of that narrative is about to be broken. After months and months of gaslighting through Rachel Maddow’s conspiratorial tirades and anonymous CIA leaks through the Washington Post, rank-and-file Democrats are about to realize that they’ve been had, and journalists all around the country are about to realize they’ve bet their reputation on a lie.

Last week, for instance, Ivanka Trump raised eyebrows when she was seated next to Angela Merkel for the German chancellor’s first official visit to Trump’s White House.

As her role in the White House grows — a role that comes with no playbook — Ivanka Trump plans to adhere to the same ethics and records retention rules that apply to government employees, Gorelick said, even though she is not technically an employee. But ethics watchdogs immediately questioned whether she is going far enough to eliminate conflicts of interest, especially because she will not be automatically subjected to certain ethics rules while serving as a de facto White House adviser.
