In my case, 3 weeks+ and they couldn't really get any information from abroad, barring a confirmation of my postgraduate degree.

Mine took exactly three weeks from the day I signed the release for them to dig into my past. The 3rd party will get in touch with you as and when they needed more documents and contacts from you. Patience is the key here. You can always dispute their findings with explanation or proof.

Jan 20th 2016 - Embassy require more in-depth info on asset for i-864


Feb 1st 2016 - Sent more in-depth info on assets as requested. Received the next morning

April 5th 2016 - POE Newark. No questions asked.


April 14th 2016 - SSN received


May 10th 2016 - First day at my new job :dancing:


May 27th 2016 - Green Card received

Bout the background checks for abroad, what do they actually check on other than the education and job history?

As for job history, do they call up ex employers one by one? Some of my ex employers I did not get along with as I left because I was unhappy with the job.

22 January 2018 - Biometrics Appointment letter received

11 August 2018 - 18 Months extension received (Exp on Sept 2019)

8 April 2019 - I751 Approved

12 April 2019 - NOA and greencard received

They run your SSN and do a credit check. They also check for police clearance in the countries you have lived in. Delta uses a 3rd party and they called all my former employers that I listed down (they asked for work history dated back 12 years and all the residential addresses during those years). Be prepared to explain your employment gap if you want to exclude some of your ex employers. 

 

Don't worry too much tho, they only talk to HRs and verify that you indeed worked there at the period and duration that you mentioned. I don't think they ask about your job performance and whatnot.
