Muslim community organizes effort to repair damaged Jewish cemetery near St. Louis

 

UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. — After an act of vandalism damaged dozens of graves in a historical Jewish cemetery near St. Louis, organizers have stepped up to help repair the damage, with one notable effort coming from the Muslim community.

The fundraiser, called Muslims Unite to Repair Jewish Cemetery, organized by Linda Sarsour with MPower Change and Tarek El-Messidi with CelebrateMercy, set their fundraising goal at $20,000, stating that “the Muslim-American community extends our hands to help rebuild this sacred space where Jewish-American families have laid their loved ones to rest since the late 1800’s.”

Police would not say if they considered the vandalism at Chesed Shel Emeth Cemetery in University City to be a hate crime or not, according to KTVI. It is believed there was some organization behind the crime, meaning this was not the act of one individual.

More than 100 headstones were damaged. Video shot from above the cemetery shows scores of headstones toppled to the ground.

The Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect delivered a searing statement late Tuesday morning, accusing the White House of tacitly embracing anti-Semitism with its earlier silence and for failing to specifically cite the Jewish people in its International Holocaust Remembrance Day statement last month.

"The President's sudden acknowledgment is a Band-Aid on the cancer of anti-Semitism that has infected his own administration," the group's executive director, Steven Goldstein, said in a social media post. "(Trump's) statement today is a pathetic asterisk of condescension after weeks in which he and his staff have committed grotesque acts and omissions reflecting anti-Semitism, yet day after day have refused to apologize and correct the record."

The statement continued: "Make no mistake: The anti-Semitism coming out of this administration is the worst we have ever seen from any administration. The White House repeatedly refused to mention Jews in its Holocaust remembrance, and had the audacity to take offense when the world pointed out the ramifications of Holocaust denial."

Honestly, I feel more anti semitism these days coming from the left than the right. And I don't feel any change for the worst since the elections. I'm sure some parts of the country do, but at least around here, it's usually the left, especially portions of the left that seem to associate every Jew with Israel and every Israeli with war crimes that don't seem to particularly like me. I have met no Trump supporter here that had an issue.

Trump has to be very careful speaking about anti-Semitism, otherwise he may lose a large part of his electoral base.

Speaking against Israel is not anti-semitism. It's anti-zionism. Apples and light bulbs... That they haven't come for you, doesn't mean they're not out there.

Donald Trump's disavowal this week of white supremacists who have cheered his election as president hasn't quieted concerns about the movement's impact on his White House or whether more acts of hate will be carried out in his name.
