K1 Visa and Reception

Hi All,

I have a question that is probably been answered. My fiance lives abroad and we are filing his K1 visa next week with a lawyer. We wanted to know if it was ok to hold a reception after he receives the visa in his country? We would not do a religious or legal marriage, just a party. But it would be with a white dress and tux. Is this ok? Will it effect us negatively down the road with his green card and other paperwork?

No, not a good idea at all. People have been denied for that. Consulate could assume you are married which makes you ineligible for K1. Please use the search tool and you will see all kinds of threads warning against this.

Question... Why are you filing your K1 with a lawyer? Is your case complicated?

I know you mentioned doing the party after he gets the visa. Just beware that they can also deny at the POE. If they think you got married they will void the visa.

I agree with all the others- anything which even vaguely looks like a wedding, don't do it.

I would suggest doing one of two things:

- Wait and have the reception after you are legally married in the USA and you have filed AOS and he has AP for travel; then go on a honeymoon back to his country and have the reception.

- Have a going away party rather than a reception. No white dress and tux, no "congrats on the wedding" banner or pictures that look like they are wedding pic. Just a fun party.
