Hello,

I am currently filling out the I864A with my mother, the joint sponsor (household member). We are confused with this little part. Maybe we're overthinking.

Part 5. Sponsor's promise, etc...

I, the Sponsor, [NAME], in consideration of the household member's promise to support the following intending immigrant(s) and to be jointly and severally liable for any obligations I incur under the affidavit of support, promise to complete and file and affidavit of support on behalf of the following named intending immigrant(s).

Then there's an empty box and below the box there's ___________________________ (Indicate Number)

What number are they referring to? I assumed they would ask for the name of the immigrant and was surprised to see "Number" instead of "Name".

Your mother likely should be filling out an I-864 not an I-864a as a joint sponsor vs household member.

But in that spot I think you put the number of immigrants that household member is sponsoring?

If we are going to be living in the US with my mother after the visa, then she would be the household member, correct? I called USCIS with this question and in this case they said she would need to fill out an I-864A.

We filed from abroad in Morocco, but my technical "home" is with her in the US. I am only in Morocco temporarily. We will both be living with her after we receive the visa. Does this mean the I-864A was the correct choice?

Thanks,

No, that's not right. The affidavit has to be correct when it is signed, not based on future circumstances. Even if, for the sake of argument, your mother could file a I-864A, it is better that she file her own I-864 as it makes your case stronger and more easily approvable.

So you should file I-864 and your mother should file her own I-864.

If she is married then her spouse should file I-864A.

Also, let me just say that the people you call on the phone are very often wrong. Don't rely on the "misinformation" line to help you. Best of luck.

Okay, then on the I-864 she would put that she is the only joint sponsor, or the first of two? Me and her together?

Hi Harpa,

I wanted to verify these parts of the I-864. Since my mom is not considered to be in my "household size," because we won't be living with her until the future, then do I keep the "Income you are using from any other person who was counted in your household size..." empty? Her filling out her own separate I-864 will not need to be included as fact in my I-864?
