It's funny you use crime, which is a small percentage of our population as an excuse to justify discrimination and systematic racism against black people but you don't apply this same logic to the Philippines.

I have debated this with my wife. She loves the new President and has always been very concerned about the problems with drugs, crime, poverty, and corruption in the PI. I don't think she really understood the death toll his war on drugs and call for killing 'drug dealers' but having lived there she seems to think that the situation is desperate enough to warrant desperate measures. My wife does have problems with the implementation but seems to think that in some respects it needs to be done.

I've been thinking about the Duterte presidency for a while now. If, before the election, I were to have made a list of the most important issues facing the Philippines, it would have been:

1. Corruption

2. Corruption, I list it twice because it is that big of a problem.

3. The economy/poverty, although fixing the corruption problem would probably help.

4. Chinese aggression in the West Philippine Sea.

5. Improving infrastructure.

6. Crime, all crime, not just drugs.

There is nobody I personally know who is directly affected by the drug problem. Other crime, like theft, maybe so, but we have not had to deal with a drug problem at all.

I can't see why "killing everybody who uses or sells drugs" is such a winning idea. It isn't really going to make lives better for the majority of the people, imo. Why not deal with the other more important issues?

And, lastly, I really hope Dutertes's anti-American attitude doesn't spread to others in the country. That will definitely do more harm than good for the Filipino citizens.

Instead of finding real solutions to real problems, it feels good to think that drugs are the big problem and that killing the offenders will lead to good things. Easy to understand. It takes the difficulty of nation building and packages it into something easily digestible and transfers ill feelings to a unified (though misleading and dangerous) purpose.

The Philippines would stop patrolling the South China Sea alongside the U.S. Navy, to avoid upsetting Beijing.

And Duterte already asked US special troops to leave, don't want to buy F-16 jets anymore (waste of money).

Instead to buy weapons from China and Russia.

He is not a fan of the U.S. his EID speech blaming the U.S. for problems in the middle east was a clear indicator. I forsee USCs not being able to travel to the Philippines soon. And let's be clear, we've never had the best of relations with China and Russia. That's why he's aligning himself with them. Giving up the south sea is a small price to him.
