Hi,

My fiancé's father is willing to cosponsor me for a K1 visa, but he doesn't want to send me a completed I-134 and evidence - he'd prefer to send it directly to the embassy because it contains private information (income, life insurance policy value, etc.) that he doesn't really want me or my fiancé to see.

Does anyone know if this is allowed for London, and if so, what other information he would have to send with it? Presumably the case number - is there anything else?

Alternatively, can he leave some of the fields empty? He might be more amenable to sending it to me if he can get away with entering just his income and no other financial information.

he can redact whatever he wants -

however - I am not aware of any doc intake process at London IV for the I-134 except from your hand to the doc screener's hand.

Live and in person.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Thanks Darnell. Do you know if it's written in any official instructions anywhere that he can redact information from the form?

If his salary income is enough, then he can leave the assets (insurance, investments, savings part) blank on his I-134. An employer letter testifying to his yearly income will be enough to satisfy London that he qualifies. He doesn't even have to send his tax return or bank statements.

And if he still wants to send his information privately, he can put it in a sealed envelope marked "to be opened by Immigrant Visa Unit, US Embassy London personnel only". He can send that to you to take unopened to your interview.

And if he still feels uncomfortable (I don't blame him) with his financial details lying around at your place, he can send it directly to the Immigrant Visa Unit in London marked as

I-134 Affidavit of Support for

Beneficiary: (full name) Date of birth:

Petitioner; (full name). Date of birth:

Case number: LND XXXXXXXXXXX

Visa: K1

I am POSITIVE this is correct information for London.

The fiancé's father can seal his documents in an envelope which must be mailed to you, so that you can bring them in to the London interview on the day. If he can trust you enough to not look at the documents in the envelope (goodness you're his son's fiancé, does he think you're going to run off with his financial info?), you can unseal them in front of the official when you are asked to show them right then and there.

The consponsor must complete the I-134. If he is using income only then assets do not needed to be filled out. The cosponsor should also offer a simple employer letter on a company letterhead and signed by boss or HR to back up the income they have marked down on the form. London seems to like those, eg ''our employer X Smith has been employed for X years and earned X amount.'' If not that then a tax transcript which can be obtained from the IRS would also work. When it comes time to adjust your status, the cosponsor (if you will still be using him) will have to fill out more financial support and tax information again on a different form so they need to get a little more comfortable with sharing.

London allows you to self sponsor.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

well, i had another thought - ie - there is a way to mail it in, but it delays your process.

and it's this:

go to the interview, without the dad's stuff. get the 221G. London IV gives you an address to send stuff in, with a worksheet thingie.

Scan the 221g doc and the worksheet doc, email to Dad - he can set up a USPS priority mail international mailing thingie - should arrive within 4 days of him sending it.

Then it's another 2 weeks to catch up with your casefile, another week for it to be reviewed, another week for the Vice-Consul to flip the status to 'issued'.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Darnell-- London will take by mail before the interview. I remember a few who did that. One was a Mom asking a bunch of questions trying to help her son. There was a Thailand connection...where they met or son was working there so she was helping him sort the visa stuff. Dad refused to divulge his financials. London FAQ at the time said mailing to consulate instead of beneficiary was fine. They did. It will work and less complicated than purposely getting a 221g redusal.

Thanks all. I imagine he'll go for sending it directly to the embassy now we know that will work.

We're planning to do adjustment of status with my savings and my fiancé's income for this tax year, so we shouldn't need his father to help us with that.

If the dad's income is sufficient then no other information would be needed. Recent paystubs, employer letter, and maybe a recent tax return. Check to see what London expects because they are pretty "easy" with regard to the K1 affidavit of support.

My fiancé's dad sent the I-134 to the address Nich-Nick gave above. I emailed them a couple of weeks later using the contact form on the embassy website to ask them if they got it, but didn't get a response. It turned out they did have it, though - when I was submitting my documents, the guy told me that it had turned up, so I didn't need to provide anything further for the financial support requirement. Phew! :D

(I spent Saturday preparing a cover letter and bank statements to use to self-sponsor, fearing that the I-134 had gotten lost somewhere. Just in case anyone else is in a similar situation in the future: the Halifax branch in Mayfair were happy to give me a stamped 12 month statement.)
