Once you get the Biometrics letter, you can go to the office any time before the appointment and get through?

Does this make the process faster?

Received biometrics letter on yesterday and completed biometrics today. It's been 10 days since NOAs. Our appointment was for 2/12 but decided to go right after work at 3. The place was empty. In and out in 10 mins. Now, the wait...

Yeah, that is true! All my cases show updated on Jan 25th. Got the texts on Jan 23rd, so maybe that is when they sent out the letter.

 

Purely based on speculation. I'm assuming you can see the;

- opening of the package (noa-1)

- Check cashed

- NOA letter sent

- Biometric letter sent

- File sent to local office

- Biometrics taken

- Background checks

- Received at local office

Again it's purely speculation, but it would make sense that they time stamp at least those entries.

Yea....at least here is Tennessee they accepted it early with the letter. I'm not sure if it speeds the process up but I'm hoping it will. Edited by HislittleSecret

Same boat as you here starting to be worried. Mailed ours out 1/15 and it arrived 1/19 after MLK holiday. Haven't received anything yet not even a text.

NO. Think about it, an appointment system with a bunch of ad hoc walk ups and cancelled appts would be highly inefficient and pointless

Hello guys! I am arriving in the US soon and having a look now at how to file AOS papers, etc.

I wanted to clarify about the SSN.

In the guide for K-1 holders , it says to apply for SSN as soon as you arrive in the US (or like 2 weeks after so that they have the name in the database). And then after getting married, you need to go back to their office and ask to change the name on it.

For me it seems too confusing, why would you do it twice? Can I apply for SSN after I get married? Or I will need the number for getting married?

How did you do and when?

I got one years ago, so for me there was no reason to get one. But the way I read the rules and regulations, it goes as follows:

- You can get one if you are a legal residence. having entered on a K-1 will give you that status for 90 days.

- They need to check you're status through their system. Hence the 2 weeks to make sure your name will pop-up.

- Than you change it if your name changes after marriage. Bring the certificate

- If you decide to wait, you run into the potential problem that your 90 days are done. You now have no status until you're EAD/AP/Greencard has been processed. You're not an illegal alien, but you can't prove that your status is legal (you see the difference).

- If you wait till after marriage but are still within the 90 days. The name in the system does not technically match anymore, so there may be some problem there.

- If you wait till you get the combo card, you got matching names again and should have no problem. You need the SSN for a drivers license for most DMV's (Check your local state). So that's why people don't want to wait.

Now if you get married way early you should have enough time left on your I-94, but than you can still run into the "human factor". Not everybody in the SSN office knows the exact rules. So there is room for discussion (normally not something you can easily win).

I have waited to ger SSN number after my marriage since I wanted to avoid going there twice and changing my name.

I had no issues whatsoever. Everything went smooth and fine and had my number 4 days later in the mail.

I did not have any problem with my name change after marriage. Since you show them you I-94 that has your maiden name (and my passport with maiden name) and then you birng the copy of you marriage certificate to show the name change and they can find you in the system without any issue.
