Biden Says ISIS Does Not Pose “An Existential Threat” To U.S.

In his first public remarks since the Paris attacks, Biden said Monday that ISIS does not pose “an existential threat” to the United States.

He was speaking at a clean-technology summit in Los Angeles, alongside Mayor Eric Garcetti.

Biden said “we will prevail” in the fight against ISIS and added that the U.S. was working closely with France.

The vice president warned though that “terror is designed to inspire terror” and “the moment we give in to that terror and change anything about the openness of our society is the moment they win.”

Biden said the U.S. and Europe should continue to allow the immigration of refugees and not stop the free flow of information in the wake of the terrorist attacks.

“There will be a tendency, both here and in Europe, to call for closing borders, call for closing down access to information, etc., but that’s all this is about, that’s what they’re attempting to do, that’s the ultimate victory,” Biden said. “We didn’t do it after 9/11, we didn’t do it after the Boston marathon. We’ve never done it every other occasion that’s occurred.”

“There is no existential threat to the United States in the sense that there is nothing — nothing that ISIS can do that can threaten to bring down a government, that can threaten to fundamentally alter the way we live,” Biden said.

“We will own the finish line,” Biden added. “It will take time to root it out throughout the Middle East, but it is inevitable.”

A spokesperson for the Islamic State militants released a recording claiming the group was not deterred by reports that its forces were forced out of the Iraqi city of Tikrit.

"The Islamic State will remain, and it is only getting stronger and achieving more victories," said Abu Mohammad al-Adnani in the recording. He claimed that ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi accepted the oath of allegiance by his Boko Haram counterpart and called on Muslims to immigrate to the area.

I am trying to figure out why, if you are so opposed to the goals that ISIS has, is why you continue to carry their water?

They want to have a disproportionate impact on the western psyche for the amount of damage they have actually inflicted. You are inflating their accomplishments and inflating their real impact.

They want to get free propaganda through social media channels, you are copy and pasting their propaganda and holding it up as a fact free of charge. ( guess I am guilty too, I quoted you quoting them)

Western leaders are not ignoring the situation. Could they be more effective? probably Can we have a debate about the role of the US and what the best tactical and strategic approach is? Every day and all day. But we are dealing with a three year old, and in our house we don't let three year olds run the program, we take charge as adults.

Actually no trouble with life beyond the usual and expected problems of everyday life for a working father. Your response illustrated my point brilliantly of course.

ISIS clearly has ill intentions and high aspirations along with delusions of grandeur which you parrot hook line and sinker as though you're their own propaganda minister.

I recognize that they have issued threats, committed horrific acts of terror, and they have ambition to carry out further acts of terror here. If they succeed it will be as John Kerry put it so aptly horrifying and shocking but hardly a surprise. I count on our security apparatus to continue to thwart those a-holes but recognize the difficulty of always being able to do so. This type of threat is difficult to stop one hundred percent of the time. But I don't know how even a successful act ala the Paris attack poses an existential threat to the US.

You do realize that you're doing EXACTLY what ISIS wants you to? R41 and Rob put it perfectly, you're feeding into their hype and giving them the publicity they crave.

The saddest thing is(I pray you're not that paranoid) when you come face to face with a Muslim and start disparaging them because of this prejudice. That's the best recruitment tool ISIS has, making non Muslims treat Muslims with hatred. Which in turn makes them go sign up with the very group Muslims hate, but feel like they have no choice since we turn our backs on them.
